Job 38: The Creator questions His creature
Begin in prayer
Before the LORD answers Job, please ask Him to make us humble hearers before the Creator’s questions.
When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have ordained; what is man, that you think of him? What is the son of man, that you care for him?
Psalm 8:3-4
Father in heaven, please open our eyes as we read Your Word. Teach us to receive correction from the One who made and rules all things. Show us the Creator Son who made peace through His cross. Make us more like Jesus. And please bless our family as we worship You together. In Jesus' name, Amen.
See where we're going
The LORD now answers Job from the whirlwind, challenging words spoken without knowledge. Job must answer for a world he neither made nor governs. God describes the sea like a newborn wrapped in clouds, then confined behind doors. He asks about hail reserved for battle and rain that waters places where no person lives. Even frozen waters, stars and lightning exceed Job’s command. The questions end with hungry lions and ravens needing provision.
As you read Job 38, look for the answers:
- Who set the sea’s boundary? (verses 8 to 11)
- Where does God send rain even without people? (verses 25 to 27)
- Which hungry creatures appear at the end? (verses 39 to 41)
Reflect together
Key truth
God governs the earth, waters and creatures with wisdom beyond Job’s knowledge or power.
The LORD now answers Job from the whirlwind and challenges words spoken without knowledge. Job had asked to meet God and hear His answer, and now the LORD speaks to him. His questions place Job before the earth’s foundations, the sea’s limits and the morning’s light. Job did not make these things, and he cannot direct them. The sea appears like a newborn wrapped in clouds and then restrained by doors. Dawn reveals the earth’s shape like an impression made by a seal and shakes the wicked from their cover. Rain falls even in places where no person lives, showing care beyond human use. Stars, clouds, lightning, lions and ravens likewise lie beyond Job’s command. God reveals His wise rule without telling Job about the heavenly test or explaining each loss.
How does Job 38 show us that God governs the earth, waters and creatures with wisdom beyond Job’s knowledge or power?
The Creator sets boundaries Job did not make.
God asks where Job was when the earth’s foundations were laid. He also describes the sea confined by the boundary He gave. Even waters becoming hard as stone belong among the works His questions place beyond Job’s command.
God’s care reaches places where no person lives.
He sends rain to satisfy desolate ground and make tender grass grow. Such provision is not limited to fields useful to people. Job must consider a wisdom whose concern reaches beyond his own view.
Neither heaven nor hungry creatures wait for Job’s command.
God asks whether Job can direct constellations or send lightning. He also asks who supplies young lions and ravens with prey. These questions expose the difference between the ruler of creation and a creature within it.
Memorise
Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth? Declare, if you have understanding.
Job 38:4
Looking to Jesus in my life
Ask yourself in your heart, where do I need Jesus to humble my demand to understand and control everything?
The LORD answers Job out of the whirlwind, “Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth?” Job had asked to meet God, and now God speaks to him. The Maker of the earth does not need Job’s advice.
John 1 verse 3 teaches that all things were made through the Son. The Maker of the world died for His people and took their sins upon Himself. His finished sacrifice fully reconciles them to God. He rose from death as the beginning of their risen life.
Turn from rebellion and trust Jesus Christ. He gives forgiveness to all who receive Him by faith. The Creator’s mercy gives believers reason to submit to His wisdom, even when His purposes remain hidden.
Parent's note
Tell your children that God’s questions reveal His wise care, while He does not tell Job why each loss happened. Please do not tell them they are saved just because they grew up in a Christian home. Call each child to turn from sin and trust Jesus, and pray that God would give them a new heart.
Pray together
Now please close your time together in prayer. Thank God for wisdom and care greater than our own understanding, and bring the heart question to Him. Every child can pray, so let each one say a short prayer if they want to.
To me, the very least of all saints, was this grace given, to preach to the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ, and to make all men see what is the administration of the mystery which for ages has been hidden in God, who created all things through Jesus Christ;
Ephesians 3:8-9
Father, thank You for wisdom and care greater than our understanding. Forgive our rebellion and our demands to control what belongs to You. Please bring us to faith in Jesus, the Creator who made peace through His cross. Help us receive Your correction and trust Your wisdom this week. In Jesus' name, Amen.
