Numbers 14: God judges unbelief and keeps promises
Begin in prayer
Before reading the cost of Israel’s refusal to believe, let us ask God for hearts that receive His Word. Pray for a sober fear of sin and a ready trust in Jesus.
Therefore I swore in my wrath, “They won’t enter into my rest.”
Psalm 95:11
Father in heaven, please open our eyes as we read Your Word. Keep us from refusing Your Word, and lead us to Jesus, who bears judgment and gives rest to His people. Make us more like Jesus. And please bless our family as we worship You together. In Jesus' name, Amen.
See where we're going
Israel weeps at the spies’ report and plans to return to Egypt. Joshua and Caleb urge them to trust the Lord, but the people threaten to stone them. God threatens to destroy Israel, and Moses pleads for pardon according to His great loving kindness. God pardons, yet declares that the unbelieving generation will die during forty years in the wilderness. Caleb, Joshua and the children will enter the land, while the spies who spread the evil report die by a plague. The people then try to enter against Moses’ warning, and their enemies defeat them.
As you read Numbers 14, look for the answers:
- What do Joshua and Caleb say the Lord can do? (verses 8 and 9)
- What will happen to the children Israel feared would be captured? (verse 31)
Reflect together
Key truth
God judges unbelief and keeps His promise to bring His people into the land.
Israel treats God’s good gift as a plan to destroy them. Their wish to return to Egypt rejects the Lord who has rescued them and shown His glory. Moses asks for pardon because God has made His mercy and His name known among the nations. God grants pardon, so the whole nation is not destroyed, yet the unbelieving generation must die in the wilderness. Their children will enter the land they refused, and Caleb and Joshua will go in. Forty years answer the forty days spent spying, as the people bear the consequences of their rebellion. Going forward after God commands them to turn back is another refusal to listen, and it ends in defeat.
How does Numbers 14 show us that God judges unbelief and keeps His promise to bring His people into the land?
God’s promise calls His people to trust Him.
Joshua and Caleb urge the people to receive the land from the Lord. Israel answers by threatening to stone them. Their fear for wives and children becomes an accusation against the God who brought them out of slavery.
God hears the plea for mercy without overlooking rebellion.
Moses pleads for God’s name among the nations and for His great loving kindness. God grants pardon and does not destroy the whole nation. Yet every counted man who murmured must die in the wilderness, except Caleb and Joshua.
God keeps His promise even while He judges unbelief.
God will bring the children into the land their parents rejected. The spies who spread the evil report die by a plague. When the people try to advance without the Lord, the Amalekites and Canaanites beat them down to Hormah.
Memorise
If Yahweh delights in us, then he will bring us into this land, and give it to us; a land which flows with milk and honey.
Numbers 14:8
Looking to Jesus in my life
Ask yourself in your heart, what unbelief must I bring to Jesus instead of defending it?
God says of Israel's little ones, “them I will bring in”. The generation that rejected His promise will die in the wilderness. His judgment is real, and His promise will still stand. Hebrews 3 verse 19 warns that unbelief kept them from entering.
We also deserve judgment for refusing God. Jesus suffered for His people, carrying their sin and bearing the punishment they deserved on the cross. He rose from the dead, and His finished sacrifice is enough to give them peace with God. No further payment is needed for the guilt He bore.
So turn from your unbelief and trust Jesus today. He forgives repentant sinners who come to Him for mercy. Please do not delay because you have heard His Word many times. Receive the Savior who has paid for sin, and follow Him with a listening heart.
Parent's note
Tell your children that unbelief deserves God’s judgment, and urge them to come to Jesus while they hear His call. Please do not tell them they are saved just because they grew up in a Christian home. Call each child to turn from sin and trust Jesus, and pray that God would give them a new heart.
Pray together
Now please close your time together in prayer. Thank God for mercy that hears prayer and faithfulness that keeps His word, and bring the heart question to Him. Every child can pray, so let each one say a short prayer if they want to.
Blessed is he who finds no occasion for stumbling in me.”
Matthew 11:6
Holy God, Your judgment is right and Your mercy is great. Please forgive our unbelief and turn each of us to trust Jesus. Keep us from treating Your warnings lightly or delaying obedience. Give us hearts that receive Your Word and follow the Savior who brings His people to You. Amen.
