Numbers 18: God provides for His servants

Begin in prayer

Before hearing how God provided for His servants, please ask Him to teach us grateful trust. Pray that we will honour His holy service and see His care through Jesus.

Yahweh is my portion. I promised to obey your words.

Psalm 119:57

Father in heaven, please open our eyes as we read Your Word. Help us trust Your provision and honour Your gifts, and show us Jesus, who gave Himself to bring His people near. Make us more like Jesus. And please bless our family as we worship You together. In Jesus' name, Amen.

See where we're going

God tells Aaron that the priests and Levites must guard the sanctuary so wrath will not fall on Israel again. The Levites help, while Aaron and his sons alone perform the priestly service, and an outsider who approaches must die. God gives the priests portions of holy offerings, firstfruits and the firstborn that belong to Him. Human firstborn and unclean animals must be redeemed, while the firstborn of clean animals are offered. The Levites receive Israel’s tithes for their service instead of a tribal share in the land. From these gifts they must give their best tenth to the priest and treat the holy things with care.

As you read Numbers 18, look for the answers:

Key truth

God guards His people through priestly service and provides for those He calls.

God answers Israel’s fear by giving the priests and Levites responsibility for His holy tent. Their careful service keeps others from approaching where they must not go, so wrath will not fall again. This calling is a gift, and it also carries responsibility for any failure in the holy service. Since the servants receive no tribal share of farmland, God provides their food from Israel’s offerings. The Levites receive the tithe, a tenth, for their work at the tent. They too must honour God by giving the best tenth of what they receive to the priest. Both the service and its support belong to the Lord who cares for His people.

How does Numbers 18 show us that God guards His people through priestly service and provides for those He calls?

God gives holy service to guard His people.

The Levites help at the tent, while the priests keep the altar and the place within the veil. Crossing those limits brings death to the servants as well as those who approach. God’s appointed boundaries protect the people He has brought near.

God provides for the households of those who serve.

Some holy portions belong to the priests alone, while others may be eaten by clean members of their households. God gives them to Aaron and his sons and daughters “as a portion forever” (verse 19). The Lord’s gifts feed the homes whose work is at His tent.

God’s servants honour Him from the gifts they receive.

The Levites receive a tenth from Israel because they have no tribal portion of farmland. They give the best tenth of that gift to the priest. God provides their food, and they must honour Him instead of treating His holy gifts carelessly.

Memorise

I am your portion and your inheritance among the children of Israel.

Numbers 18:20

Looking to Jesus in my life

Ask yourself in your heart, how do I treat God’s gifts as my own and forget my need of Jesus?

God tells Aaron, “I am your portion and your inheritance”. The servant who receives no tribal share in the land is cared for by the Lord Himself. The gifts on Israel’s altar also feed the households serving there.

Our deepest need is for God Himself, and sin keeps us far from Him. Jesus paid for His people’s sins at the cross and suffered their judgment. He rose again, having completed the sacrifice that brings them to God. His saving work supplies everything needed for their welcome.

Turn from your sin and rely on Jesus. All who trust His death receive forgiveness and fellowship with God. Please let His generosity teach you to honour the gifts He gives. The Savior who served His people at such cost will care for those who belong to Him.

Parent's note

Tell your children that God cares for those who serve Him, and the gift they need first is forgiveness through Jesus. Please do not tell them they are saved just because they grew up in a Christian home. Call each child to turn from sin and trust Jesus, and pray that God would give them a new heart.

Pray together

Now please close your time together in prayer. Thank God for guarding His people and providing for those who serve, and bring the heart question to Him. Every child can pray, so let each one say a short prayer if they want to.

For who is greater, one who sits at the table, or one who serves? Isn’t it he who sits at the table? But I am among you as one who serves.

Luke 22:27

Father, thank You for caring for Your servants and for giving Jesus to serve and save His people. Please turn each of us from sin to trust in Him. Teach us gratitude for what You give and generosity toward the work of Your Word. Help us use Your gifts with care. Amen.
