Numbers 2: God is among His people
Begin in prayer
Before picturing Israel’s tents gathered around the Lord, please pause and gather your own hearts before Him. Ask God to teach us to honour His presence and to bring us near through His Son.
Hear us, Shepherd of Israel, you who lead Joseph like a flock, you who sit above the cherubim, shine out.
Psalm 80:1
Father in heaven, please open our eyes as we read Your Word. Teach us to honour Your place among Your people, and show us how Jesus brings us near. Make us more like Jesus. And please bless our family as we worship You together. In Jesus' name, Amen.
See where we're going
God arranges Israel’s camp around the Tent of Meeting in the wilderness. The tribes camp under their own standards, at a distance from the holy tent. Judah’s company stands on the east and sets out first when the people travel. The other companies have their places too, and the Levites travel with the tent in the middle. The whole people camp and march in the order God gives them.
As you read Numbers 2, look for the answers:
- What stands in the middle of Israel’s camps? (verse 17)
- How do the people respond to God’s order? (verse 34)
Reflect together
Key truth
God gives His people their places around His presence.
Imagine a whole nation of tents, with the Tent of Meeting in the middle. God gives each tribe a place around it, and a place in the line when they move. A standard is a banner that helps each group know where it belongs. Judah goes first, while Dan’s company takes the last place in the line. The tent travels among them, so God’s presence shapes their resting and their walking. No tribe gets to push God aside and make itself the centre. We need that reminder when our plans begin with what we want.
How does Numbers 2 show us that God gives His people their places around His presence?
God gives every tribe a place near His tent.
The tribes camp on all four sides of the Tent of Meeting. They stay at a distance because the place where God meets His people is holy. Their banners help them find their place in the camp God has arranged.
God stays at the centre when His people travel.
The Levites carry the tent in the middle of the travelling companies. The people’s order changes from a camp to a line, while God’s tent remains among them. They belong to the Lord in every place along the way.
God’s people follow the order He gives them.
The same command governs where they rest and how they move. Each company has its part, so everyone must listen to God through Moses. Please encourage your children to value the place God gives, even when someone else goes first.
Memorise
Then the Tent of Meeting shall set out, with the camp of the Levites in the middle of the camps.
Numbers 2:17
Looking to Jesus in my life
Ask yourself in your heart, what do I put before God, and how do I need Jesus to help me?
God says the tent will travel “in the middle of the camps”. He gives Israel a place around Himself. They carry their tents across the wilderness with the Lord’s dwelling among them. His presence is the gift that makes their camp different.
Jesus came to live among us, as John 1 verse 14 tells us. Our sin shuts us out from fellowship with God. On the cross, the Son carried the sin of His people and suffered their judgment. Then He rose from death. His saving task is complete, and His sacrifice fully answers their guilt.
Please turn from sin and believe in Jesus. He welcomes those who seek His mercy, and their sins are forgiven through Him. You do not have to make yourself fit for God before you come. Christ brings His people near and teaches them to live with God at the centre.
Parent's note
Tell your children that being near God’s people does not save them, and Jesus alone brings sinners into fellowship with God. Please do not tell them they are saved just because they grew up in a Christian home. Call each child to turn from sin and trust Jesus, and pray that God would give them a new heart.
Pray together
Now please close your time together in prayer. Thank God that His presence gave Israel’s camp its centre, and bring the heart question to Him. Every child can pray, so let each one say a short prayer if they want to.
For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there I am in the middle of them.”
Matthew 18:20
Father, thank You for living among the people You called. Please forgive our habit of putting ourselves first. Turn each heart from sin to faith in Jesus, who brings His people near You. Help us to listen to Your Word and honour You in our plans this week. Amen.
