Numbers 26: God keeps His word to Israel

Begin in prayer

Before meeting the new generation counted beside the Jordan, let us remember that God keeps every word. Ask Him for hearts that heed His warning and seek the inheritance He gives through Jesus.

He gave them the lands of the nations. They took the labor of the peoples in possession,

Psalm 105:44

Father in heaven, please open our eyes as we read Your Word. Teach us to heed Your warnings and trust Your promise, and show us the lasting inheritance Jesus secures for His people. Make us more like Jesus. And please bless our family as we worship You together. In Jesus' name, Amen.

See where we're going

After the plague, God tells Moses and Eleazar to count the men able to fight, in the plains of Moab beside the Jordan. The tribes are counted by their families, preparing them to receive the land God has promised. Larger tribes will receive larger shares, and the inheritance will be divided by lot. God also recalls His judgments on rebels, while noting that Korah’s sons did not die. The Levites are counted separately because they will not receive a tribal share of the land. Of the men counted earlier at Sinai, only Caleb and Joshua remain, just as God said.

As you read Numbers 26, look for the answers:

Reflect together

Key truth

God keeps His word in judgment and gives a new generation their promised inheritance.

The second census stands beside the Jordan after the plague, with the land ahead of Israel. God again counts the men who can fight, now preparing their families to receive an inheritance. The count guides the size of each tribe’s share, while the lot settles where it will be. The Levites are counted separately because their calling brings no tribal portion of land. The former army’s generation has died as God warned, with Caleb and Joshua left from that count. Yet the families are still here, and God’s promise of the land is still moving toward fulfilment. Please teach your children to trust His faithfulness and receive His warning against unbelief. Being counted among Israel does not give anyone forgiveness.

How does Numbers 26 show us that God keeps His word in judgment and gives a new generation their promised inheritance?

God prepares the families He has kept to receive the land.

The count is taken beside the Jordan, where Israel waits to enter the land. God orders their inheritance according to the size of their tribes and the lot. His promised gift will have a place for the families He brings in.

God’s warnings come true, and His mercy preserves a people.

The men counted at Sinai have died, except Caleb and Joshua. The deaths of rebels remain a warning, while Korah’s sons are spared. God’s people must take both His warning and His continuing mercy to heart.

God’s care reaches beyond the men counted for battle.

Zelophehad had no sons, so the count names his five daughters (verse 33). Serah, the daughter of Asher, is named too (verse 46). Being counted for war measures a task, and it does not measure a person's worth.

Memorise

“To these the land shall be divided for an inheritance according to the number of names.

Numbers 26:53

Looking to Jesus in my life

Ask yourself in your heart, what do I trust in besides Jesus to give me a place with God?

God says, “To these the land shall be divided for an inheritance”. A generation has died under His judgment, yet He still prepares a people to receive His gift. His word has failed in neither judgment nor mercy.

We deserve judgment for our own sin. Jesus suffered for His people and carried their guilt to the cross, then rose from the dead. He has completed the work that fully secures their place with God. Galatians 3 verse 29 says that those who belong to Christ share the inheritance promised to Abraham.

So turn from your sin and trust Jesus for your place with God. Forgiveness is His gift to those who come in faith. Please do not rely on a family name or being counted among people at church. The Savior who has paid for sin gives His people an inheritance they could never earn.

Parent's note

Tell your children that a family name cannot give them a place with God, and Jesus alone secures His people’s inheritance. Please do not tell them they are saved just because they grew up in a Christian home. Call each child to turn from sin and trust Jesus, and pray that God would give them a new heart.

Pray together

Now please close your time together in prayer. Thank God for keeping His word in judgment and preserving a people for His promised gift, and bring the heart question to Him. Every child can pray, so let each one say a short prayer if they want to.

and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and God’s Kingdom is at hand! Repent, and believe in the Good News.”

Mark 1:15

Father, thank You that Your warnings and Your promises are true. Please forgive our presumption and turn each of us to trust Jesus for a place with You. Teach us to receive Your gifts with gratitude and to take Your Word seriously. Keep us hoping in the Savior who holds His people. Amen.
