Numbers 30: God requires faithful promises

Begin in prayer

Before reading about promises made before God, let us ask Him for honest and careful hearts. Pray that our words will honour Him and that we will see our need of Jesus.

Don’t snatch the word of truth out of my mouth, for I put my hope in your ordinances.

Psalm 119:43

Father in heaven, please open our eyes as we read Your Word. Teach us to speak truth and keep our word, and show us Jesus, whose obedience never failed. Make us more like Jesus. And please bless our family as we worship You together. In Jesus' name, Amen.

See where we're going

Moses tells the tribal heads that a person who vows to God must keep that word. A father may disallow his young daughter’s vow when he hears it, and the Lord forgives her. A husband may also confirm or disallow his wife’s vow on the day he hears it. A widow’s or divorced woman’s vows remain binding on her. If a husband keeps silent, he confirms the vow, and cancelling it later makes him bear the guilt. God gives these rules for responsibility between husband and wife, and father and young daughter.

As you read Numbers 30, look for the answers:

Key truth

God requires honest promises and responsible care from those who lead a home.

A vow is a promise made to God, and He requires people to keep what they have said. The law also guards the responsibilities already given within the home. A young daughter’s father and a wife’s own husband may disallow a vow when they first hear it. Silence confirms the vow, so a leader cannot delay and later act as though the promise never mattered. If he cancels it afterward, he bears the guilt for the broken obligation. The widow or divorced woman is responsible for her own vows. God takes both a person’s word and a leader’s care seriously, because all stand accountable before Him.

How does Numbers 30 show us that God requires honest promises and responsible care from those who lead a home?

God expects a person’s promise to be kept.

A vow binds the speaker before the Lord. The words must be followed by the action promised. A widow or divorced woman answers for her own vows, so her word cannot be dismissed as unimportant.

God gives fathers and husbands responsibility to lead with care.

A father may disallow his young daughter’s vow, and a husband may disallow his own wife’s vow when he first hears it. A husband’s headship calls for sacrificial love toward his wife, who shares his equal worth (Ephesians 5 verses 23 to 25). This authority must protect those entrusted to him and never silence or excuse harm.

God holds a leader accountable for what he allows and changes.

Silence on the day he hears confirms the vow. A husband who later cancels it must bear the guilt, because his delay allowed it to stand. The Lord forgives the woman when her vow is rightly disallowed, while careless authority remains answerable to Him.

Memorise

When a man vows a vow to Yahweh, or swears an oath to bind his soul with a bond, he shall not break his word.

Numbers 30:2

Looking to Jesus in my life

Ask yourself in your heart, what broken promise do I need to confess and bring to Jesus?

God says the one who makes a vow “shall not break his word”. Our words are spoken before Him, and promises must never be used carelessly. Those who lead a household must also answer for the care they give.

We have broken promises and failed in our responsibilities. Jesus kept His Father’s will without failure, then died for His people, bearing their guilt and punishment on the cross. He rose again after completing the saving work that fully answers their sin. His faithful obedience and sacrifice are all they need for peace with God.

Turn from your sin and trust Jesus, the faithful Savior. His mercy gives forgiveness to those who rely on Him. Please confess the words you have failed to keep, and seek His help to speak honestly. The Lord who saves His people teaches them to honour Him with dependable words and loving care.

Parent's note

Tell your children that God hears every promise, and Jesus alone obeyed without failure and saves those who trust Him. Please do not tell them they are saved just because they grew up in a Christian home. Call each child to turn from sin and trust Jesus, and pray that God would give them a new heart.

Pray together

Now please close your time together in prayer. Thank God for teaching honest promises and responsible care, and bring the heart question to Him. Every child can pray, so let each one say a short prayer if they want to.

But let your ‘Yes’ be ‘Yes’ and your ‘No’ be ‘No.’ Whatever is more than these is of the evil one.

Matthew 5:37

Father, forgive the promises we have broken and the careless words we speak. Thank You for the faithful obedience and saving death of Jesus. Please turn each of us from sin to trust Him. Teach us to speak truth, keep our word and care for those You have entrusted to us. Amen.
