Numbers 8: God cleanses His servants

Begin in prayer

Before seeing the Levites prepared to serve the Lord, let us ask Him to cleanse our hearts. Please pray that we will rely on Christ’s sacrifice and learn to serve with thankful care.

Yahweh, truly I am your servant. I am your servant, the son of your servant. You have freed me from my chains.

Psalm 116:16

Father in heaven, please open our eyes as we read Your Word. Show us why we need cleansing, and lead us to trust the sacrifice Jesus made for His people. Make us more like Jesus. And please bless our family as we worship You together. In Jesus' name, Amen.

See where we're going

Aaron lights the seven lamps as God commands, in the lamp stand made according to the pattern shown to Moses. Then God prepares the Levites for service through cleansing and sacrifice before the whole congregation. The people lay hands on the Levites, and the Levites lay hands on the bulls offered for them. God takes them in place of Israel’s firstborn and gives them to Aaron to serve at the tent. They begin service at twenty-five, and at fifty they leave that work while continuing to help their fellow Levites.

As you read Numbers 8, look for the answers:

Reflect together

Key truth

God cleanses His servants and gives them to care for His people.

The lamps shine before God, and those who serve at His tent must be prepared as He commands. The Levites are washed, shaved and presented before the gathered people. Israel lays hands on them because they are being given to serve on the people’s behalf. Then the Levites lay their hands on bulls offered for their own cleansing. They need atonement, the sacrifice God provides to deal with their sin, before they can serve. God gives them to Aaron and his sons to guard Israel from a plague when people approach the sanctuary. Their service is a gift of care from the God who rescued Israel’s firstborn.

How does Numbers 8 show us that God cleanses His servants and gives them to care for His people?

God’s servants need cleansing before they serve.

The Levites wash their clothes and receive the water of cleansing. Their hands rest on the animals offered for their sin and dedication. Serving at the holy tent begins with what God provides to make them clean.

God gives the Levites to care for His people.

The Levites belong to the God who spared Israel’s firstborn in Egypt. He gives them to help Aaron and his sons at the sanctuary. Their service guards the people from a plague when they come near the holy place.

God cares for His servants through the years of their work.

God sets an age to begin the work and an age to leave it. Older Levites still help their fellow servants and keep the charge of the tent. Their years of carrying have an end, while their care for the Lord’s service continues.

Memorise

Thus you shall separate the Levites from among the children of Israel, and the Levites shall be mine.

Numbers 8:14

Looking to Jesus in my life

Ask yourself in your heart, what makes me think I can serve God without first coming to Jesus?

God says, “the Levites shall be mine.” They are His gift to the priests, set apart to serve Israel. Yet the servants themselves need cleansing and sacrifice before they begin their work.

Our usefulness cannot wash away our sin. The blood of Jesus cleanses the conscience so His people may serve the living God, as Hebrews 9 verse 14 teaches. At the cross He suffered for His people and carried their sin. He rose from the grave after completing the sacrifice that fully cleanses their guilt.

So come to Him, turning from your sin and trusting Jesus alone. He grants forgiveness to all who rely on His blood. You do not need to bring Him a record of good service. Come for His cleansing, and let the Savior teach you to serve the God who gives life.

Parent's note

Tell your children that useful work cannot wash away sin, and only the sacrifice of Jesus cleanses a guilty heart. Please do not tell them they are saved just because they grew up in a Christian home. Call each child to turn from sin and trust Jesus, and pray that God would give them a new heart.

Pray together

Now please close your time together in prayer. Thank God for cleansing and providing servants to care for His people, and bring the heart question to Him. Every child can pray, so let each one say a short prayer if they want to.

You are already pruned clean because of the word which I have spoken to you.

John 15:3

Father, thank You for the servants You gave Israel and for the Savior who cleanses His people. Please turn each of us from sin and teach us to trust Jesus alone. Cleanse our hearts, make us willing to serve, and help us care for others in the work You give us. Amen.
