Proverbs 11: The LORD delights in integrity

Begin in prayer

Before we weigh honesty against the lure of gain, let us seek the LORD who delights in justice. Ask Him to make our dealings truthful and our hands generous.

“‘You shall do no unrighteousness in judgment, in measures of length, of weight, or of quantity.

Leviticus 19:35

Father in heaven, please open our eyes as we read Your Word. Show us the integrity You love and the emptiness of dishonest gain. Help us see the righteousness and generous mercy of Jesus. Make us more like Jesus. And please bless our family as we worship You together. In Jesus' name, Amen.

See where we're going

The LORD delights in accurate weights and hates a balance used to cheat. That same contrast between integrity and treachery reaches the home, the market and the whole city. Riches cannot help in the day of wrath, while cruel words and selfish schemes bring trouble to others and their makers. Generosity brings blessing, and the person who trusts riches will fall. The fruit of the righteous gives life, yet even the righteous are repaid on earth, and judgment surely reaches the wicked.

As you read Proverbs 11, look for the answers:

Reflect together

Key truth

The LORD delights in integrity and brings wicked confidence to ruin.

A merchant’s balance compares goods with weights to decide a fair exchange. Altering the weights steals from a neighbor while making the transaction look fair. God’s delight in accuracy joins worship to the ordinary business of the market. The same integrity protects a confidence, seeks counsel and helps a city flourish. Generosity also rests on a different kind of trust from hoarding grain or depending on riches. The person who waters others receives refreshment, while wicked gain cannot protect its owner when God judges. These sayings teach the goodness of upright living under God’s care, rather than a method for buying prosperity.

How does Proverbs 11 show us that the LORD delights in integrity and brings wicked confidence to ruin?

God sees how we buy, sell and speak.

A false balance turns a purchase into theft. Faithful speech protects a neighbor instead of using gossip to destroy. The LORD delights in upright ways because truth and justice belong to Him.

Generosity blesses others while riches cannot save.

The person who withholds grain receives a curse from those who need it. The one who sells it receives blessing. Riches still fail the person who makes them his trust, while righteous fruit gives life to others.

Memorise

Those who are perverse in heart are an abomination to Yahweh, but those whose ways are blameless are his delight.

Proverbs 11:20

Looking to Jesus in my life

Ask yourself in your heart, what dishonest gain am I defending instead of coming to Jesus?

“Riches don’t profit in the day of wrath.” Everything we collect cannot silence the charge of sin before God. We need the righteousness that our dishonest hearts cannot supply.

Jesus had no deceit and gave Himself for His people. At the cross He carried their guilt and suffered its judgment. Death was defeated when He rose. His completed sacrifice is enough to justify the guilty, and His mercy cannot be bought.

Turn from your sin and put your trust in Jesus. All who rest in Him receive forgiveness without paying a price. His generous grace frees believers to deal honestly and give freely. Find your lasting treasure in Him.

Parent's note

Tell your children that honest and generous living pleases God, yet good deeds cannot purchase acceptance before Him. Please do not treat a Christian home as proof of salvation. Call each child to turn from sin and trust Jesus, and pray that God would give them a new heart.

Pray together

Now please close your time together in prayer. Thank God that He delights in truth and generosity. Bring the heart question to Him. Every child can pray, so let each one say a short prayer if they want to.

For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that, though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, that you through his poverty might become rich.

2 Corinthians 8:9

Righteous God, thank You for caring about the way people treat one another. Please forgive our dishonest desires and lead us to trust Jesus. Help us speak faithfully, deal fairly and give with open hands. Keep our hope from resting on the things we own. Amen.
