Proverbs 15: The LORD sees and hears
Begin in prayer
Before we speak about gentle answers and searching hearts, let us remember that God sees us now. Ask Him to teach our family humble speech and sincere prayer.
‘Yahweh is slow to anger, and abundant in loving kindness, forgiving iniquity and disobedience; and that will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, on the third and on the fourth generation.’
Numbers 14:18
Father in heaven, please open our eyes as we read Your Word. Help us remember that Your eyes are everywhere. Show us Jesus, who brings sinners near, and teach us to seek Your mercy. Make us more like Jesus. And please bless our family as we worship You together. In Jesus' name, Amen.
See where we're going
“A gentle answer turns away wrath,” while harsh speech adds fuel to anger. The LORD watches the evil and the good, so the heart beneath the words cannot escape Him. He hates the sacrifice of the wicked and delights in the upright person’s prayer. Those who hate reproof will die. A simple meal with love is better than a feast with hatred. The LORD uproots the proud person’s house, keeps the widow’s borders and teaches wisdom to those who receive correction.
As you read Proverbs 15, look for the answers:
- Where do the LORD’s eyes watch? (verse 3)
- Whose prayer does the LORD hear? (verse 29)
Reflect together
Key truth
The LORD sees every heart and hears the prayers of the righteous.
God sees even the realm of the dead, so no human heart lies beyond His sight. A sacrifice cannot cover a life that refuses Him. The prayer He delights in comes with the upright heart that seeks His ways. The difference appears at home, where a small meal with love surpasses costly food served with hatred. The widow’s boundaries also matter to God, though she lacks the power of a proud household. Humility learns to weigh an answer before speaking and to receive the correction pride avoids. The LORD hears His people without being fooled by outward religion.
How does Proverbs 15 show us that the LORD sees every heart and hears the prayers of the righteous?
God sees the heart that our words reveal.
A gentle answer can calm anger, while a harsh word stirs it up. The righteous heart weighs its answer before speaking. Since God sees everywhere, even hidden thoughts belong before His judgment.
The LORD delights in sincere prayer.
The wicked person’s sacrifice is an abomination to the LORD. God “hears the prayer of the righteous” and loves the one who pursues righteousness. Humble attention to reproof belongs with drawing near to Him.
Memorise
Yahweh’s eyes are everywhere, keeping watch on the evil and the good.
Proverbs 15:3
Looking to Jesus in my life
Ask yourself in your heart, what does God see in my heart that I need Jesus to forgive?
“Yahweh’s eyes are everywhere.” A harsh word may pass quickly, yet the heart that spoke it remains open before Him. Religious activity cannot hide the evil He sees.
Jesus is the righteous Savior who brings guilty people near to God. He suffered for His people at the cross, bearing the punishment their sins required. He rose again to life. His offering paid the whole debt, and His mercy provides a sure welcome for those who believe.
Turn from your sin and put your trust in Jesus. Confess the heart you cannot hide and seek forgiveness through Him. The Lord hears those who come resting in the Savior. His eyes see you now, and He receives everyone who comes to Him.
Parent's note
Tell your children that God sees the heart behind both angry speech and outward religion. Please do not assume they are saved because they worship in a Christian home. Call each child to turn from sin and trust Jesus, and pray that God would give them a new heart.
Pray together
Now please close your time together in prayer. Thank God that He sees the heart and hears sincere prayer. Bring the heart question to Him. Every child can pray, so let each one say a short prayer if they want to.
Put on therefore, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, a heart of compassion, kindness, lowliness, humility, and perseverance;
Colossians 3:12
Lord God, thank You for hearing Your people and seeing those whom others overlook. Please lead us to confess the sin hidden in our hearts and trust Jesus. Teach us to weigh our answers, welcome correction and bring peace to the ordinary conversations of our home. Amen.
