Proverbs 17: The LORD tests the heart
Begin in prayer
Before we compare silver in a furnace with hearts before the LORD, let us seek His mercy. Ask Him to uncover the motives that disturb our home and injure our neighbors.
“Keep far from a false charge, and don’t kill the innocent and righteous: for I will not justify the wicked.
Exodus 23:7
Father in heaven, please open our eyes as we read Your Word. Show us what our words and judgments reveal. Lead us to Jesus, the righteous Savior, and teach us love that refuses deceit and strife. Make us more like Jesus. And please bless our family as we worship You together. In Jesus' name, Amen.
See where we're going
A dry morsel in a quiet home is better than a feast spoiled by strife. The LORD tests hearts as a furnace tests precious metal, and He judges mockery of the poor and pleasure in calamity. Offenses repeated divide friends, while a friend’s love remains in adversity. Bribery may seem effective to its giver, yet the wicked receive it to pervert justice. The LORD hates acquitting the guilty and condemning the righteous, including punishing officials for integrity. A restrained tongue and an even temper show understanding where a foolish child brings grief.
As you read Proverbs 17, look for the answers:
- Who tests hearts? (verse 3)
- What two unjust judgments does the LORD hate? (verse 15)
Reflect together
Key truth
The LORD tests the heart and hates injustice that harms the innocent.
A refining pot reveals what is mixed with silver, and a furnace does the same for gold. The LORD’s test reaches the heart which no human observer can fully inspect. The measure of a home is therefore more than the food on its table. Peace, faithful friendship and a teachable spirit have worth that feasting cannot supply. The bribe that shines like a jewel in its giver’s eyes corrupts the course of justice. Calling the guilty righteous and punishing the innocent are both hateful to God. No social advantage makes either verdict right.
How does Proverbs 17 show us that the LORD tests the heart and hates injustice that harms the innocent?
God tests what a comfortable home can hide.
Quietness with a small meal is better than abundance filled with strife. A wise servant may rule over a shameful son and share the family’s inheritance. God’s judgment reaches character beneath outward position and wealth.
God hates justice twisted by deceit.
A secret bribe changes the outcome at the expense of truth. The LORD hates clearing the wicked and condemning the righteous. Even an official’s position cannot make punishing integrity right.
Memorise
The refining pot is for silver, and the furnace for gold, but Yahweh tests the hearts.
Proverbs 17:3
Looking to Jesus in my life
Ask yourself in your heart, what motive in my heart needs the mercy of the righteous Jesus?
The LORD hates the one “who condemns the righteous.” At Jesus’ trial, the innocent Savior was condemned. His suffering exposed human injustice while fulfilling God’s saving purpose.
Jesus took the death that His people’s sins deserved. He accepted judgment at the cross so that the guilty would receive righteousness through Him. On the third day He rose. His work is finished and fully sufficient, so God’s mercy never requires another payment.
Come to Him with your sinful heart exposed. Turn from your sin and put your trust in Jesus. Those who believe receive forgiveness through the righteous Savior’s death. The Judge who sees every motive gives peace through His Son.
Parent's note
Tell your children that the LORD sees motives hidden beneath comfort, wealth and outward respectability. Please do not tell them they are saved just because they grew up in a Christian home. Call each child to turn from sin and trust Jesus, and pray that God would give them a new heart.
Pray together
Now please close your time together in prayer. Thank God that His judgment sees the heart and always follows truth. Bring the heart question to Him. Every child can pray, so let each one say a short prayer if they want to.
Therefore judge nothing before the time, until the Lord comes, who will both bring to light the hidden things of darkness, and reveal the counsels of the hearts. Then each man will get his praise from God.
1 Corinthians 4:5
Righteous God, thank You that no hidden motive escapes Your sight. Please lead us to repent of pride, deceit and the pleasure we take in another person’s trouble. Bring us to trust Jesus. Give our home peace and help us judge others with truth and patient care. Amen.
