Proverbs 18: The LORD is a strong tower

Begin in prayer

Before we compare the LORD’s strong tower with an imagined wall of wealth, let us turn to Him. Ask Him to teach our family where safety is found and how wise people speak.

After these things Yahweh’s word came to Abram in a vision, saying, “Don’t be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your exceedingly great reward.”

Genesis 15:1

Father in heaven, please open our eyes as we read Your Word. Help us see the false refuge we make from possessions and pride. Show us Jesus as the safe hope of guilty people who come to Him. Make us more like Jesus. And please bless our family as we worship You together. In Jesus' name, Amen.

See where we're going

The selfish person rejects sound judgment, while a fool prefers airing his opinion to understanding. Such speech invites strife, punishment and ruin, and gossip sinks into the hearer like choice food. The LORD’s name is a strong tower, while wealth is an unscalable wall only in the rich man’s imagination. Wisdom listens before answering and tests the first account before reaching a verdict. Words can deepen an offense or bear good fruit, and loyal friendship is worth more than many companions. Finding a wife is a good gift and favor from the LORD.

As you read Proverbs 18, look for the answers:

Reflect together

Key truth

The LORD gives true safety, while pride and careless words bring ruin.

A strong tower offered shelter when danger approached. Calling the LORD’s name a tower directs trust toward who He has revealed Himself to be. The rich man imagines that his money supplies the same protection, yet the wall exists in his own judgment. The first account of a dispute can sound complete before anyone questions it. Wise hearing waits for the questions that may expose what was missing. Speech bears fruit because words influence relationships, judgments and the course of another person’s life. Humble dependence on God belongs with patient listening to people.

How does Proverbs 18 show us that the LORD gives true safety, while pride and careless words bring ruin?

The LORD is a refuge that pride cannot build.

The righteous run to the LORD’s name and are safe. Wealth seems like a high wall to the rich person. The contrast exposes imagined security and calls for humility before honor.

Wise hearing restrains words that destroy.

Answering before listening brings folly and shame. The first speaker in a dispute can sound right until another person questions him. Careful hearing protects neighbors from careless judgments and needless strife.

Memorise

Yahweh’s name is a strong tower: the righteous run to him, and are safe.

Proverbs 18:10

Looking to Jesus in my life

Ask yourself in your heart, what false refuge am I trusting instead of the Lord Jesus?

“Yahweh’s name is a strong tower.” Pride builds walls out of possessions and reputation, yet neither can shield us from the guilt of sin. We need refuge in God Himself.

Jesus bore the punishment for His people at the cross. The curse their sins deserved fell on Him, and His death secured their redemption. He rose from the tomb as the living Savior. His offering is enough to bring them into lasting peace with God.

Turn from your sin and put your trust in Jesus. Run to Him with the guilt that pride cannot hide. Through Him there is forgiveness for all who believe. His saving strength remains when the walls we imagine have fallen.

Parent's note

Tell your children that the LORD’s name means the God who makes Himself known, and that money cannot provide His refuge. Please do not presume salvation from a Christian home. Call each child to turn from sin and trust Jesus, and pray that God would give them a new heart.

Pray together

Now please close your time together in prayer. Thank God for giving a refuge stronger than wealth. Bring the heart question to Him. Every child can pray, so let each one say a short prayer if they want to.

and you are Christ’s, and Christ is God’s.

1 Corinthians 3:23

Lord God, thank You for the true refuge You give. Please expose our proud trust in possessions or the good opinion of others. Lead us to repent and believe in Jesus. Help us listen before answering and speak words that protect rather than wound our neighbors. Amen.
