Proverbs 19: The LORD’s counsel will prevail

Begin in prayer

Before our many plans are measured against the LORD’s counsel, let us listen to Him. Pray for wisdom that receives correction and remembers the people who cannot repay kindness.

Absalom and all the men of Israel said, “The counsel of Hushai the Archite is better than the counsel of Ahithophel.” For Yahweh had ordained to defeat the good counsel of Ahithophel, to the intent that Yahweh might bring evil on Absalom.

2 Samuel 17:14

Father in heaven, please open our eyes as we read Your Word. Teach us the wisdom of hearing counsel and caring for the poor. Show us Jesus and help us rest in Your purpose rather than our haste. Make us more like Jesus. And please bless our family as we worship You together. In Jesus' name, Amen.

See where we're going

Poverty with integrity is better than foolish deceit, even when wealth attracts friends and the poor are abandoned. Foolish people ruin their ways and then rage against the LORD. He gives the prudent wife, rewards kindness to the poor and calls parents to discipline while there is hope. Quarreling, laziness and a quick temper trouble the home, while false witnesses face punishment and death. Many plans fill a person’s heart, yet the LORD’s counsel prevails. Those who reject instruction stray, and scoffers face prepared penalties.

As you read Proverbs 19, look for the answers:

Reflect together

Key truth

The LORD’s counsel prevails, and His wisdom teaches mercy and correction.

A person can fill his heart with many plans, but verse 21 says “Yahweh’s counsel will prevail.” The LORD’s counsel is His own plan, and no plan of ours can overturn it. When foolishness ruins a man’s way, “his heart rages against Yahweh,” as if God had caused the trouble (verse 3). The wise man listens to counsel instead, so that he may be wise in his latter end (verse 20). The LORD’s plan also shapes how we treat the poor. Verse 17 says that the one who has pity on the poor “lends to Yahweh,” and the LORD will reward him. The same wisdom reaches the home, where verse 18 tells parents to discipline a son “for there is hope.”

How does Proverbs 19 show us that the LORD’s counsel prevails, and His wisdom teaches mercy and correction?

God’s counsel stands above our many plans.

Haste without knowledge misses the way. The fool then turns against the LORD instead of receiving instruction. Wise people listen now so that they may have wisdom in later years.

God values mercy and loving correction.

Kindness to the poor is lending to the LORD, who rewards it. A loving parent also corrects a child while there is hope. Discipline requires the parent’s self control and must never become angry or harmful treatment.

Memorise

There are many plans in a man’s heart, but Yahweh’s counsel will prevail.

Proverbs 19:21

Looking to Jesus in my life

Ask yourself in your heart, when do I blame God for my wrong, and will I confess it to Jesus?

“Yahweh’s counsel will prevail.” Our plans cannot overturn His judgment of lies, anger and selfishness. Blaming God for our foolishness only exposes the heart’s rebellion.

God’s saving purpose brought His Son to the cross. Jesus accepted the judgment for His people and carried their sins in His death. He rose to life, victorious over the grave. His completed offering supplies everything needed for their forgiveness and peace.

Turn from your sin and put your trust in Jesus. His mercy welcomes those who come without excuses, resting in Him. Everyone who trusts Him is pardoned by the Savior whose counsel stands. Then hear the wisdom that teaches mercy, patience and a teachable heart.

Parent's note

Tell your children that discipline seeks their good and requires loving self control from the parent before any correction. Please do not tell them they are saved just because they grew up in a Christian home. Call each child to turn from sin and trust Jesus, and pray that God would give them a new heart.

Pray together

Now please close your time together in prayer. Thank God for counsel that stands and mercy that He remembers. Bring the heart question to Him. Every child can pray, so let each one say a short prayer if they want to.

“For who has known the mind of the Lord? Or who has been his counselor?”

Romans 11:34

Wise and merciful Lord, thank You that Your counsel stands when our plans fail. Please turn our hearts from blame and pride to faith in Jesus. Teach us to hear advice, care for the poor and correct with patient love. Guide the plans our family makes this week. Amen.
