Proverbs 2: The LORD gives wisdom
Begin in prayer
Before our family searches for wisdom as for treasure, let us ask the Lord who gives it. Pray for hungry hearts that value His words above silver.
Give your servant therefore an understanding heart to judge your people, that I may discern between good and evil; for who is able to judge this great people of yours?”
1 Kings 3:9
Father in heaven, please open our eyes as we read Your Word. Give us understanding as we seek Your wisdom. Help us see the treasure found in Jesus and the danger of crooked paths. Make us more like Jesus. And please bless our family as we worship You together. In Jesus' name, Amen.
See where we're going
The father asks his son to store up his words and search for understanding as for hidden treasure. This search depends on the LORD, because wisdom comes from His mouth. When wisdom enters the heart, it gives discernment about the paths people take. It delivers from men who delight in evil and from a woman who abandons her marriage covenant. These ways lead toward death, while the upright remain in the land.
As you read Proverbs 2, look for the answers:
- Who gives wisdom? (verse 6)
- What dangers does wisdom help someone recognize? (verses 12 to 19)
Reflect together
Key truth
The LORD gives wisdom that guards His people from paths leading to death.
The father joins earnest seeking to dependence on God. Searching for silver requires effort, and wisdom deserves that same attention. Yet the treasure comes from the LORD’s mouth, so seeking begins with hearing His words. Knowledge becomes protection when it enters the heart and shapes what a person loves. Evil companions celebrate what is crooked, while the unfaithful woman speaks flattery and forgets God’s covenant. The danger lies in what their paths become, even when the first steps seem pleasant. The land gives Israel a concrete picture of remaining where God blesses rather than being cut off.
How does Proverbs 2 show us that the LORD gives wisdom that guards His people from paths leading to death?
The LORD gives the wisdom we must seek.
The repeated call to receive, ask and search rules out careless listening. God’s gift makes serious learning worthwhile. We hear His words because He is the source of understanding.
Wisdom helps us see where evil leads.
Crooked men delight in the evil they do. The unfaithful woman leaves the companion of her youth and forgets God’s covenant. Wisdom looks beyond attractive words to the death at the end of that path.
God preserves the way of His faithful people.
The LORD is a shield to those who walk in integrity. His protection includes the understanding that keeps their feet from evil. The good path is lived under His care, with the heart receiving His instruction.
Memorise
For Yahweh gives wisdom. Out of his mouth comes knowledge and understanding.
Proverbs 2:6
Looking to Jesus in my life
Ask yourself in your heart, what do I seek more eagerly than the wisdom found in Jesus?
The father says, “For Yahweh gives wisdom.” A life can take the wrong direction long before the danger becomes plain. God’s words expose the road that our sinful hearts are willing to choose.
Jesus came to save people whose ways had turned against God. He accepted the punishment for His people’s sins at the cross. Death could not keep Him, and He rose to life. The salvation He accomplished needs no further payment, because His sacrifice provides everything needed for forgiveness.
Come to Him, and turn from your sin. Put your trust in Jesus rather than your own judgment. He grants forgiveness to everyone who rests in Him. The greatest treasure is the Savior who brings His people into the knowledge of God.
Parent's note
Tell your children that God’s wisdom concerns the heart and the direction of a whole life. Please do not assume they are saved because they live in a Christian home. Call each child to turn from sin and trust Jesus, and pray that God would give them a new heart.
Pray together
Now please close your time together in prayer. Thank God that wisdom comes from His mouth. Bring the heart question to Him. Every child can pray, so let each one say a short prayer if they want to.
in whom are all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge hidden.
Colossians 2:3
God of wisdom, thank You for giving understanding through Your Word. We need the mercy and wisdom of Jesus. Turn our desires away from sin and lead us to believe in Him. Help our family treasure Your instruction when other voices offer an easier path. Amen.
