Proverbs 24: God repays every person’s work
Begin in prayer
Before we hear that God weighs our hearts, let us come without excuses. Ask Him to teach us wisdom that helps people in danger and refuses to rejoice in an enemy’s fall.
“If you meet your enemy’s ox or his donkey going astray, you shall surely bring it back to him again.
Exodus 23:4
Father in heaven, please open our eyes as we read Your Word. Expose the excuses that keep us from helping others. Lead us to Jesus, and teach us patient wisdom, honest judgment and mercy toward our enemies. Make us more like Jesus. And please bless our family as we worship You together. In Jesus' name, Amen.
See where we're going
Wisdom establishes a house and gives strength, while envy draws people toward those who plot harm. Those who see people being led to death must seek their rescue, because God knows whether their excuses are true. Wisdom gives hope, and the righteous rise after repeated calamity while the wicked are overthrown. The son must refuse delight in an enemy’s fall and fear the LORD and the king, because rebellion brings sudden ruin. Further sayings forbid partial judgment, false testimony and revenge. A neglected vineyard covered with thorns shows how little acts of idleness bring poverty like an armed man.
As you read Proverbs 24, look for the answers:
- Who knows whether the excuse for failing to help is true? (verse 12)
- What lesson comes from the neglected vineyard? (verses 30 to 34)
Reflect together
Key truth
God sees every excuse and repays each person’s work, so we leave revenge to Him.
Verse 11 calls us to rescue people “being led away to death.” Verse 12 then answers the excuse, “Behold, we didn’t know this.” The God who “weighs the hearts” knows whether we could not see or chose not to look. He keeps each soul, and He will “render to every man according to his work.” That truth explains verse 29, which forbids saying, “I will do to him as he has done to me.” Paying people back belongs to God, so the wise leave it with Him and refuse revenge. He even sees the secret gladness we feel when an enemy falls (verses 17 and 18). The neglected vineyard shows the same truth in daily work, because a little sleep each day brings poverty “as a robber.”
How does Proverbs 24 show us that God sees every excuse and repays each person’s work, so we leave revenge to Him?
God knows the excuses that hide neglect.
People led toward death need help from those able to act. God weighs the heart behind a claim of ignorance. His judgment gives reason to protect life and speak honestly.
God’s wisdom refuses revenge and receives instruction.
The LORD is displeased when we gloat over an enemy’s fall and may turn His wrath away from him. Honest judgment must convict the guilty without favoritism. The overgrown field teaches the observer to work before neglect brings want.
Memorise
for there will be no reward to the evil man; and the lamp of the wicked shall be snuffed out.
Proverbs 24:20
Looking to Jesus in my life
Ask yourself in your heart, what excuse am I using to avoid the mercy and obedience Jesus calls for?
“Doesn’t he who weighs the hearts consider it?” God sees through excuses that conceal neglect and resentment. Our hearts cannot escape His just repayment.
Jesus acted to save people who stood guilty before God. At the cross He suffered the penalty for His people’s sins and gave His life for them. He rose again and lives forever. His offering settled their debt in full, leaving nothing for another sacrifice to supply.
Turn from your sin and believe in Jesus. Forgiveness belongs to everyone who comes to Him in faith. Lay down the excuses you use to defend your heart. Ask Him for wisdom to act with mercy, speak truth and refuse revenge.
Parent's note
Tell your children that God sees whether their excuses hide a refusal to help someone. Please do not tell them they are saved just because they grew up in a Christian home. Call each child to turn from sin and trust Jesus, and pray that God would give them a new heart.
Pray together
Now please close your time together in prayer. Thank God for seeing our hearts and teaching wisdom that protects life. Bring the heart question to Him. Every child can pray, so let each one say a short prayer if they want to.
For whatever things were written before were written for our learning, that through perseverance and through encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope.
Romans 15:4
God who weighs hearts, thank You for teaching us through Your Word. Please lead us to confess our excuses and trust Jesus for mercy. Make us ready to help those in danger and slow to enjoy another person’s trouble. Give our family honesty, diligence and patient hope. Amen.
