Proverbs 27: God teaches humble faithful care

Begin in prayer

Before we read the warning against boasting about tomorrow, let us come to God with today’s duties. Ask Him for humble plans, faithful friends and care for the people entrusted to us.

Jonathan, Saul’s son, arose, and went to David into the woods, and strengthened his hand in God.

1 Samuel 23:16

Father in heaven, please open our eyes as we read Your Word. Teach us to receive truthful counsel and work with faithful care. Show us Jesus, and turn us from boasting about a future we cannot control. Make us more like Jesus. And please bless our family as we worship You together. In Jesus' name, Amen.

See where we're going

The reader must refuse to boast about tomorrow or supply his own praise. Anger and jealousy burden others, while an honest friend’s rebuke is better than hidden love or an enemy’s kisses. Wise friendship gives earnest counsel, and nearby help can matter more than a distant relative. A contentious wife is compared with continual dripping and something impossible to restrain. The heart reveals the person, praise tests him and the fool’s stubbornness survives the severe picture of grinding in a mortar. The chapter ends with close attention to flocks, because riches and crowns do not last and households need food and clothing.

Key truth

God’s wisdom humbles proud plans for tomorrow and teaches faithful love today.

Tomorrow is unknown, so present wealth gives no right to speak as though the future were already ours. Honest friendship accepts a painful reproof when it comes from love and seeks our good. Iron sharpening iron pictures the benefit of one person’s influence upon another. Praise tests character by showing how a person receives the honor others give. The mortar image then shows how stubborn folly can remain even under severe treatment. Such severity cannot itself create a wise heart. The final flock sayings replace boasting with close attention to health, pasture and provision. Lambs supply clothing and goats supply milk, so diligent care serves the whole household.

How does Proverbs 27 show us that God’s wisdom humbles proud plans for tomorrow and teaches faithful love today?

God’s wisdom receives help without boasting.

We cannot know what a day will bring. A friend’s faithful correction is better than flattering affection from an enemy. Humility receives counsel and leaves praise to other lips.

God’s wisdom takes faithful care of present duties.

Riches and a crown cannot guarantee provision for every generation. The keeper must know the condition of his animals and attend to their needs. Such diligence supplies food and clothing for those who depend on him.

Memorise

Don’t boast about tomorrow; for you don’t know what a day may bring.

Proverbs 27:1

Looking to Jesus in my life

Ask yourself in your heart, where am I boasting about tomorrow instead of depending on Jesus today?

“You don’t know what a day may bring.” We cannot secure the future by boasting, and we cannot remove sin by guarding our reputation. The heart needs mercy.

Jesus came to secure a lasting salvation for His people. He died for them at the cross, enduring the judgment their sins had earned. He rose from death as the victorious Savior. The debt He paid was settled in full, and His finished work remains their sure foundation.

Turn from sin and place your hope in Him. Those who trust Jesus receive forgiveness that tomorrow’s uncertainties cannot overturn. Ask Him for a humble heart that receives honest counsel. Depend on His mercy while you care faithfully for today’s duties.

Parent's note

Tell your children that plans must remain humble because none of us knows what tomorrow will bring. Please do not tell them they are saved just because they grew up in a Christian home. Call each child to turn from sin and trust Jesus, and pray that God would give them a new heart.

Pray together

Now please close your time together in prayer. Thank God for wise counsel and the work He gives us to do today. Bring the heart question to Him. Every child can pray, so let each one say a short prayer if they want to.

each of you not just looking to his own things, but each of you also to the things of others.

Philippians 2:4

Father, thank You for giving wise instruction for ordinary responsibilities. Please turn our hearts from proud boasting to trust in Jesus. Help us receive honest correction and become faithful friends. Teach us to care well for the people and duties before us today, while leaving tomorrow in Your hands. Amen.
