Proverbs 3: The LORD directs our paths

Begin in prayer

Before we consider whose understanding guides our steps, let us bow before the LORD. Ask Him for trust that welcomes His direction and His loving correction.

As for God, his way is perfect. Yahweh’s word is tested. He is a shield to all those who take refuge in him.

2 Samuel 22:31

Father in heaven, please open our eyes as we read Your Word. Help us trust You with all our hearts. Teach us to receive Your correction, and show us the perfect trust of Jesus. Make us more like Jesus. And please bless our family as we worship You together. In Jesus' name, Amen.

See where we're going

The father calls his son to remember his teaching and trust the LORD with his whole heart. Trust reaches into possessions and into the painful experience of correction. Wisdom is worth more than silver because the LORD used wisdom to establish the earth. Such wisdom brings steady steps and restful sleep under His care. The son must also give needed help, refuse needless quarrels and reject the violent man’s ways. The LORD mocks the mockers, but “he gives grace to the humble.”

Key truth

The LORD directs those who trust Him and corrects those He loves.

Trusting the LORD means placing the weight of our decisions on His wisdom. Our own understanding becomes dangerous when we treat it as the final judge. Giving the first of the harvest expresses that trust before we know how much will remain. Correction also tests trust, because pain can make loving care seem like rejection. The father says the LORD corrects the son in whom He delights. Hebrews 12 verses 5 to 11 applies these words to God’s children, whose discipline trains them in righteousness. These wise patterns teach dependence, rather than a bargain that guarantees health and wealth. The same trust sends us toward a needy neighbor instead of postponing the help already in our hands.

How does Proverbs 3 show us that the LORD directs those who trust Him and corrects those He loves?

The LORD knows the path better than we do.

The son must acknowledge God in all his ways. Trust reaches the choices made with money, strength and understanding. Fearing the LORD means turning from evil instead of being wise in our own eyes.

The LORD corrects those He loves.

The command forbids despising discipline or growing weary of reproof. Correction can hurt while still expressing a father’s delight in his son. Parents must govern their own anger and correct with love and self control, never with harm.

God’s wisdom makes us good neighbors.

Help must not wait until tomorrow when we can give it today. A neighbor who lives securely beside us must not become the target of our schemes. The LORD’s friendship belongs with the upright, while His curse rests on the wicked.

Memorise

Trust in Yahweh with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

Proverbs 3:5-6

Looking to Jesus in my life

Ask yourself in your heart, where am I leaning on myself instead of trusting Jesus?

“Trust in Yahweh with all your heart,” the father says. We often trust God while His way agrees with ours, then resist when He corrects us. Our divided trust reveals hearts that need a Savior.

Jesus trusted His Father through obedience and suffering, even when obedience led to the cross. There He bore the punishment His people deserved for their rebellion. On the third day He rose. His work is finished, and it is enough to make everyone who believes right with God.

Turn from your sin and put your trust in Jesus. His obedience, death and resurrection are the ground of forgiveness for those who come to Him. Everyone who trusts Him is God’s own child, and the LORD directs that child’s paths.

Parent's note

Tell your children that the LORD corrects those He loves, and that Jesus is the Savior they need. Please do not tell them they are saved just because they grew up in a Christian home. Call each child to turn from sin and trust Jesus, and pray that God would give them a new heart.

Pray together

Now please close your time together in prayer. Thank God for His wise direction and loving correction. Bring the heart question to Him. Every child can pray, so let each one say a short prayer if they want to.

For it is God who works in you both to will and to work, for his good pleasure.

Philippians 2:13

Father in heaven, thank You that Your wisdom is better than our own understanding. Please turn our hearts from pride to faith in Jesus. Help us receive correction and give help without delay. Let our family depend on You in the decisions we face this week. Amen.
