Proverbs 4: God teaches the path of life

Begin in prayer

Before we hear a father pass on the teaching he received as a child, let us give God our attention. Ask Him to guard the spring from which our words and choices flow.

that he may incline our hearts to him, to walk in all his ways, and to keep his commandments, and his statutes, and his ordinances, which he commanded our fathers.

1 Kings 8:58

Father in heaven, please open our eyes as we read Your Word. Guide our hearts in Your wisdom. Show us Jesus, who gives life, and help us keep our eyes on His ways. Make us more like Jesus. And please bless our family as we worship You together. In Jesus' name, Amen.

See where we're going

A father remembers being a tender child who received instruction from his own father. He now urges his children to get wisdom even at great cost. Two paths lie before them, one brightening like dawn and the other dark enough to hide every obstacle. The wicked depend on evil and violence as though these were their food and drink. The son must hold the father’s teaching in his heart, because the whole course of life flows from there. Guarding the heart includes words, eyes and feet that turn away from evil.

Key truth

God’s wisdom guides our hearts along the path of life.

The father can teach because he first had to listen. Wisdom passes through generations as each child receives words that are worth keeping. Yet a family’s history cannot replace the son’s own response. He must love wisdom and take firm hold of instruction. The two roads show how choices grow into a direction, with increasing light or stumbling darkness. The heart is the wellspring because desires and purposes shape what the mouth, eyes and feet do. Guarding it means attending to the words of wisdom before evil becomes a settled habit. Jesus teaches that sinful actions come from within, so outward tidiness cannot cure the heart (Mark 7 verses 21 to 23).

How does Proverbs 4 show us that God’s wisdom guides our hearts along the path of life?

Wisdom is worth more than our possessions.

The father says to gain understanding even if it costs everything. A crown and garland picture the honor wisdom brings. The father gives sound teaching that his children must keep.

The wicked stumble in darkness.

The wicked cannot sleep until they have done evil. Their appetite has become trained toward hurting others. The father therefore commands his son to avoid their path before he becomes used to it.

The heart shapes the direction of life.

The wellspring picture explains why the heart needs the greatest care. Crooked speech, wandering eyes and careless feet grow from desires within. God’s words must reach there if our steps are to change.

Memorise

Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it is the wellspring of life.

Proverbs 4:23

Looking to Jesus in my life

Ask yourself in your heart, what desire in my heart needs the saving help of Jesus?

“Keep your heart with all diligence,” the father says. A spring affects every stream that runs from it. Our sinful desires also reach into ordinary words and choices, and we cannot make the source clean ourselves.

Jesus had a pure heart and walked in perfect obedience. At His cross He carried the sins of His people and endured judgment for them. He rose from the dead, victorious over the evil that enslaves them. His offering settled their guilt once for all, and no further sacrifice is needed.

Come to Him with the heart you cannot repair. Turn from your sin and put your trust in Jesus. Forgiveness belongs to all who depend on His saving mercy. Ask Him to change what you love and teach your feet to walk in His light.

Parent's note

Tell your children that God sees the desires behind words and actions, and that they need Jesus to change their hearts. Please never treat a Christian home as proof that a child is saved. Call each child to turn from sin and trust Jesus, and pray that God would give them a new heart.

Pray together

Now please close your time together in prayer. Thank God for teaching the path of life. Bring the heart question to Him. Every child can pray, so let each one say a short prayer if they want to.

Therefore watch carefully how you walk, not as unwise, but as wise;

Ephesians 5:15

Lord, thank You for words that reach the heart. Please show us the desires that lead our words and steps away from You. Give us repentance and faith in Jesus. Help us listen to wise instruction and turn our eyes from evil today. Amen.
