Proverbs 5: God sees every path

Begin in prayer

Before we read God’s warning about unfaithfulness, let us remember that every path is open before Him. Pray that our family will love what He gives and refuse the promises of sin.

No one is greater in this house than I am, and he has not kept back anything from me but you, because you are his wife. How then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?”

Genesis 39:9

Father in heaven, please open our eyes as we read Your Word. Help us see the danger of sin and the goodness of faithfulness. Show us the faithful love of Jesus and lead us to Him. Make us more like Jesus. And please bless our family as we worship You together. In Jesus' name, Amen.

See where we're going

The father warns his son that an adulteress speaks words as sweet as honey. Their end is bitter, leading toward death and the loss of honor, wealth and health. The son must stay far from her door before regret arrives too late. In place of seeking another woman, he should rejoice in the wife of his youth. Water from his own well pictures the delight that belongs within marriage. The LORD sees every path, and the wicked become trapped in the cords of their own sins.

As you read Proverbs 5, look for the answers:

Key truth

God sees every path and calls husbands to delight in faithful marriage.

The sweetness of honey and smoothness of oil explain why temptation can sound welcome. The father carries the son past that first impression to the bitter end. Staying far from the door means refusing the approach before desire claims there is no escape. A cistern stores water for a household, and the son’s own well pictures delight reserved for his wife. God gives marriage as the lifelong union of one man and one woman. The chapter celebrates affection within that union while exposing adultery as betrayal. God sees the path from its first steps, so secrecy cannot hide guilt. Marriage ultimately displays Christ’s faithful love for His church, as Ephesians 5 verses 25 to 32 explains.

How does Proverbs 5 show us that God sees every path and calls husbands to delight in faithful marriage?

Sin’s pleasant promises hide a bitter end.

Honey describes the attraction of flattering speech. The sharp sword and road to death show what the promise conceals. The father wants his son to hear the warning before he spends his life in regret.

God gives delight within faithful marriage.

The son is told to rejoice in the wife of his youth. The well belongs with faithful love shared within marriage. A husband is to cherish his wife for life.

The LORD sees what people try to hide.

God examines every path a person takes. The wicked man’s own deeds become cords that hold him. His ruin comes with his refusal to receive instruction, so hidden sin is neither safe nor free.

Memorise

For the ways of man are before Yahweh’s eyes. He examines all his paths.

Proverbs 5:21

Looking to Jesus in my life

Ask yourself in your heart, what hidden sin must I bring to Jesus for mercy?

The father says, “The cords of his sin hold him firmly.” Sin offers freedom and then ties the sinner to guilt. The LORD sees the paths we hide from other people.

Jesus came with faithful love for His people, and their guilt was laid upon Him at the cross. He suffered the judgment that their unfaithfulness required. God raised Him from the dead. The debt is paid in full, and His sacrifice will never need repeating.

Turn from your sin and put your trust in Jesus. Confess what is hidden instead of defending it. All who repent and believe receive forgiveness through His blood. The faithful Savior gives mercy to the guilty and calls them to leave the path that binds them.

Parent's note

Tell your children that the warning concerns adultery, and explain the marriage pictures in your own words with their full meaning. Please do not presume salvation because a child has grown up in a Christian home. Call each child to turn from sin and trust Jesus, and pray that God would give them a new heart.

Pray together

Now please close your time together in prayer. Thank God for seeing every path and giving faithful love. Bring the heart question to Him. Every child can pray, so let each one say a short prayer if they want to.

But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, for its lusts.

Romans 13:14

Holy God, thank You for the goodness of faithful marriage. You see every thought and every hidden step. Please lead us to repent of our sin and trust Jesus for forgiveness. Teach our family to refuse flattering lies and honor the commitments You give. Amen.
