Proverbs 7: God warns against the deadly path

Begin in prayer

Before we hear a father describe a young man walking into danger, let us seek God’s help. Ask Him to make His teaching dearer to us than the lies that flatter our desires.

“But if you will not do so, behold, you have sinned against Yahweh; and be sure your sin will find you out.

Numbers 32:23

Father in heaven, please open our eyes as we read Your Word. Expose the promises that lead us toward evil. Help us see Jesus as the Savior we need, and teach us to treasure Your words. Make us more like Jesus. And please bless our family as we worship You together. In Jesus' name, Amen.

See where we're going

The father calls his son to guard instruction as carefully as the apple of his eye. From his window he sees a young man without understanding pass near an unfaithful woman’s house at twilight. She meets him with crafty intent and speaks about offerings, a prepared bed and her husband’s absence. Her persuasive words lead him to follow without understanding that the path will cost his life. The father tells his sons to guard their hearts because her house leads down to death.

Key truth

God’s instruction exposes tempting lies and warns us away from death.

The apple of the eye is something a person protects without delay. The father asks for that same care toward teaching kept within the heart. His story shows why this care matters before temptation becomes an urgent choice. The woman uses religious language about vows while inviting the young man to violate her marriage. Her account of an absent husband makes secrecy sound secure. The young man sees a welcome invitation, while the father sees an animal approaching slaughter. That difference exposes the need for wisdom which considers the end of a path. God’s warning reaches the heart before the feet follow it.

How does Proverbs 7 show us that God’s instruction exposes tempting lies and warns us away from death?

God’s words must be kept close.

Instruction belongs within the heart, like words written on a tablet. Calling wisdom a sister pictures closeness and loyalty. A warning left at a distance cannot guide the desires we welcome.

Religious words can hide a sinful invitation.

The woman mentions sacrifices and fulfilled vows while planning adultery. Her husband’s absence supplies another reason to feel safe. The father teaches his son to judge the path by God’s words instead of flattering speech.

The deadly path begins with a wandering heart.

The young man follows as an animal goes to slaughter. He does not know that the cost is his life. The father therefore tells his sons to keep their hearts from turning toward her ways.

Memorise

Keep my commandments and live! Guard my teaching as the apple of your eye.

Proverbs 7:2

Looking to Jesus in my life

Ask yourself in your heart, what tempting lie am I believing that I need Jesus to expose?

The young man “doesn’t know that it will cost his life.” He trusts the invitation and misses the end of the road. We also need God to uncover the lies that our sinful desires welcome.

Jesus knew the cost of saving His people. He went to the cross and suffered for their sins, accepting judgment in their place. The grave gave Him up when He rose in victory. His sacrifice accomplished redemption once for all, securing forgiveness through His blood.

Come to Him before following sin further. Turn from your sin and put your trust in Jesus. He will not reject the one who seeks His saving mercy. His words are true, and the life He gives outlasts every false promise.

Parent's note

Tell your children that the story warns against adultery and explain the woman’s invitation without dropping its meaning. Please never presume that growing up in a Christian home saves a child. Call each child to turn from sin and trust Jesus, and pray that God would give them a new heart.

Pray together

Now please close your time together in prayer. Thank God for exposing the end of a tempting path. Bring the heart question to Him. Every child can pray, so let each one say a short prayer if they want to.

No temptation has taken you except what is common to man. God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted above what you are able, but will with the temptation also make the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.

1 Corinthians 10:13

Lord God, thank You for warning people before sin destroys them. We need Your light when evil sounds attractive. Please turn our hearts to Jesus in repentance and faith. Keep Your words close to our thoughts and help us refuse the lies we meet. Amen.
