Proverbs 8: God’s wisdom is better than gold

Begin in prayer

Before wisdom calls from the high places and the city gates, let us listen before God. Ask Him to teach us what is worth more than everything we could desire.

Who is like you, Yahweh, among the gods? Who is like you, glorious in holiness, fearful in praises, doing wonders?

Exodus 15:11

Father in heaven, please open our eyes as we read Your Word. Teach us to value Your wisdom above gold. Show us Christ, the wisdom of God, and give us hearts that love His ways. Make us more like Jesus. And please bless our family as we worship You together. In Jesus' name, Amen.

See where we're going

Wisdom again speaks as a woman calling where roads meet and people enter the city. Her truthful instruction is better than silver, gold and rubies. She hates pride and evil, and through her rulers govern with justice. She describes being with the LORD before the earth existed and rejoicing as He established the world. Her delight reaches toward mankind in the world God made. Those who hear and find wisdom obtain life and favor from the LORD, while those who hate her love death.

As you read Proverbs 8, look for the answers:

Key truth

God’s wisdom is better than every treasure and leads to life.

Wisdom’s public invitation answers the secretive appeal of sin in the previous chapter. Her words can be trusted because they contain nothing crooked. The riches she offers belong with righteousness and justice, so wealth gained through evil cannot be her gift. Her presence before earth’s beginning shows that wisdom belongs to God’s ordering of the world. Seas, clouds and the earth’s foundations obey the boundaries God sets. Wisdom’s delight therefore reaches into a world made with order and purpose. This is wisdom pictured as a speaking woman, and her birth language does not teach that God’s Son was created. Paul calls Christ the wisdom of God (1 Corinthians 1 verse 24), and Christ is the eternal Son, never created.

How does Proverbs 8 show us that God’s wisdom is better than every treasure and leads to life?

God’s wisdom speaks truth and hates evil.

Wisdom calls everyone to hear words that contain no perverseness. The fear of the LORD includes hatred of pride and arrogance. Receiving wisdom therefore changes what people value and what they refuse.

God used His wisdom to make the world.

Wisdom speaks of delight beside the LORD as He establishes the heavens and sets boundaries for the sea. The world follows God’s wise command. The life He made cannot be understood by pushing His wisdom aside.

Finding wisdom means finding life.

The listener waits at wisdom’s door as someone eager to hear. Finding her brings favor from the LORD. Refusing her wrongs one’s own soul and chooses the way of death.

Memorise

For whoever finds me, finds life, and will obtain favor from Yahweh.

Proverbs 8:35

Looking to Jesus in my life

Ask yourself in your heart, what treasure am I placing above the wisdom of Jesus?

Wisdom says, “For whoever finds me, finds life.” Her invitation reaches people who cannot make sense of life while refusing the God who made it. Prideful hearts still choose their own way.

At the cross, God displayed His wisdom through the saving death of His Son. Jesus carried the sin of His people and endured the judgment due to them. God raised Him up, defeating death. His finished sacrifice supplies all His people need for peace with God.

Turn from your sin and put your trust in Jesus. In Him the guilty find forgiveness and life. Seek the Savior above the treasures that can be lost. The One who saves sinners also teaches them to love God’s wise ways.

Parent's note

Tell your children that wisdom is pictured as a woman and that Jesus is the eternal, uncreated Son of God. A child still needs Christ even when raised in a Christian home. Call each child to turn from sin and trust Jesus, and pray that God would give them a new heart.

Pray together

Now please close your time together in prayer. Thank God for wisdom that is better than gold. Bring the heart question to Him. Every child can pray, so let each one say a short prayer if they want to.

But we speak God’s wisdom in a mystery, the wisdom that has been hidden, which God foreordained before the worlds for our glory,

1 Corinthians 2:7

God of all wisdom, thank You for the order and goodness of Your works. Please forgive the pride that makes us value riches above Your words. Lead us to turn from sin and trust Jesus. Help us seek understanding and delight in what You call good. Amen.
