Psalms 102: The unchanging LORD hears the destitute

Begin in prayer

Before we hear the afflicted person's cry, let us remember the Lord whose years have no end. Pray through Christ to the unchanging Lord, bringing Him our passing days and the future of the next generation.

“For I, Yahweh, don’t change; therefore you, sons of Jacob, are not consumed.

Malachi 3:6

Father in heaven, please open our eyes as we read Your Word, and help us to see Christ. Show us that the unchanging Lord hears the destitute and gives His people a future beyond their passing days. Make us more like Jesus. And please bless our family as we worship You together. In Jesus' name, Amen.

See where we're going

An afflicted worshipper asks God to hear quickly as fading strength, forgotten food and lonely bird pictures give his pain a voice. Enemies reproach him while ashes and tears fill ordinary meals, and he names God's anger behind his being taken up and cast away. His days wither, yet the Lord remains forever and will arise in mercy for Zion's stones and dust. He has built Zion and answered the destitute, and this must be written for a future people to praise Him. From heaven He hears condemned prisoners and releases them so that gathered peoples and kingdoms may serve and praise Him. The singer asks not to be taken away midlife, turning from the strength God has weakened to the Creator whose years never end. Earth and heaven will wear out like clothing, while the unchanged Lord endures and establishes His servants' descendants before Him.

Key truth

The unchanging LORD hears the destitute and builds a lasting future for His people while their own days fade.

The afflicted person's prayer brings bodily wasting and loneliness before the God whose hidden face he asks to see. Smoke, scorched bones and withered grass join life's brevity to an affliction that leaves him without appetite or company. Ashes were a sign of mourning, and their place beside bread and tears shows sorrow invading his daily food. God's anger casts him down, yet God's eternity gives his fading days a lasting ground for the mercy he seeks. Zion's stones and dust matter to God's servants, and His appointed compassion makes her restoration a hope that reaches nations and kings. His answered prayer of the destitute and release of condemned prisoners give the coming generation works to record and reasons for praise. He has weakened the singer's strength and shortened his days, drawing a renewed plea before the Maker whose years span every generation. He laid the foundation of the earth, and the heavens are the work of His hands. Hebrews 1 verses 10 to 12 apply these words about the everlasting Creator to the Son, whose unchanging life secures His people's future.

How does Psalm 102 show us that the unchanging LORD hears the destitute and builds a lasting future for His people while their own days fade?

God receives the afflicted person's cry from weakness and loneliness.

The sufferer brings a wasting body and a solitary life before the Lord. Smoke and withered grass give his passing days their picture. Asking for God's face and ear makes this complaint a prayer to the One whose attention he needs.

God's lasting reign gives hope for mercy toward Zion.

Enemies use the singer's name as a curse, and he traces his distress to God's anger. The Lord's own name endures beyond those fading days. His appointed mercy draws the prayer toward Zion's restoration and the stones His servants love.

God hears the destitute and gives later generations reason for praise.

The Lord has answered the prayer of people stripped of ordinary help. From heaven He sees the condemned and hears their groaning. His release gathers peoples and kingdoms to declare His name, giving the coming generation a testimony to receive.

God's unchanging years establish a future beyond His servants' passing days.

The singer asks for more life from the God who has shortened his days. Earth and heaven wear out like clothing beneath their Maker. His years have no end, and His servants' descendants will be established before Him.

Memorise

But you are the same. Your years will have no end. The children of your servants will continue. Their offspring will be established before you.”

Psalm 102:27-28

Looking to Jesus in my life

Ask yourself in your heart, what fading thing am I trusting more than the unchanging Lord Jesus?

The afflicted man prays, “Your years are throughout all generations.” He brings his shortened days before the Maker who will remain when heaven and earth wear out. The Lord who hears the destitute gives His servants a future before Him.

Our guilt makes our need greater than the loss of passing strength. Jesus bore God's anger against His people's sins and died to secure their pardon. He rose from death. His completed saving work provides everything needed for their forgiveness and lasting life, answering the judgment they could never escape themselves.

Turn from your sin and rest your trust in Jesus. Every sinner who comes to Him receives forgiveness. Bring Him the weakness, reproach and loneliness that have made your days feel small. The Saviour whose years never end receives His people's pleas for mercy and their prayers for the generation still to come.

Parent's note

Tell your children that the unchanging Lord hears the destitute and gives His people a future beyond their passing days. Please do not tell them they are saved just because they grew up in a Christian home. Call each child to turn from sin and trust Jesus, and pray that God would give them a new heart.

Pray together

Now please close your time together in prayer. Thank God for hearing the destitute and ask for mercy grounded in His unchanging life. Bring the heart question to Him. Every child can pray, so let each one say a short prayer if they want to.

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

John 1:1

Everlasting Lord, please hear those whose strength is failing and whose loneliness has become heavy. Bring us to Jesus for pardon and the lasting life His completed work has secured. Show mercy to Your troubled people, and give the next generation reason to praise You. Teach us to bring our short days before the Saviour whose years never end. Amen.
