Psalms 109: The LORD stands with the needy

Begin in prayer

Before we hear David bring merciless accusations before God, let us consider the Judge who sees both cruelty and need. Ask Him to lead us to Jesus for pardon and teach us to seek His just and merciful care.

May Yahweh judge between me and you, and may Yahweh avenge me of you; but my hand will not be on you.

1 Samuel 24:12

Father in heaven, please open our eyes as we read Your Word, and help us to see Christ. Show us that the Lord judges merciless cruelty and stands beside the needy who seek His loving kindness. Make us more like Jesus. And please bless our family as we worship You together. In Jesus' name, Amen.

See where we're going

David asks the God of his praise to answer the lying hatred that has repaid his love and good with evil. He prays for the chief enemy to face an adversary, a guilty verdict, shortened days and the loss of his office. The judgment reaches the man's wife, children, property and family memory, because he persecuted the poor and needy instead of remembering kindness. The cursing he loved has entered him like water and oil, and David asks that it cover him like clothing. Poor and wounded himself, David seeks deliverance for God's name and loving kindness as his strength fades and people mock him. He asks for rescue that his enemies will recognise as God's hand, trusting God's blessing while their curses return in shame. His own mouth promises public thanks, because the Lord stands at the needy person's right hand to save him from those judging his soul.

Reflect together

Key truth

The merciful LORD stands with the needy and brings just judgment on merciless accusers.

David brings love repaid by hatred before the God he praises, answering false accusation with prayer. He asks that the enemy be condemned, his prayer become sin and another take his office. Acts 1 verses 16 and 20 say the Holy Spirit spoke through David about Judas, whose office another would take. The prayer reaches the enemy's household, property and remembered name, answering the cruelty of a man who hunted the poor and brokenhearted to death. His parents' sins are to remain before God, while his descendants' name is to disappear, showing the terrible reach of the judgment requested. Loved cursing has already entered him like water and oil, and David asks that it remain the clothing he chose. David's own wounded heart, weak knees and fading life make God's good loving kindness his ground for seeking rescue. He wants the answer known as God's hand, with shame for the accusers and joy beneath the blessing that their curses cannot overthrow. The final promise of public thanks rests on the Lord standing beside the needy, saving them from the judges who condemn their souls.

How does Psalm 109 show us that the merciful LORD stands with the needy and brings just judgment on merciless accusers?

God hears the wronged person's case and judges deceitful cruelty.

The enemies give David hatred for love and false accusation for good. He brings their words before God in prayer. His plea asks for a guilty verdict, shortened days and the removal of the enemy's office.

God's judgment answers merciless persecution with the loss of kindness and lasting honour.

The man refused kindness and hunted the poor to death. David asks judgment that takes property, leaves the wife widowed and the children fatherless, begging without anyone to show pity. His parents' sins remain remembered while his descendants and their name are cut off. The scope of the sentence answers the terrible evil of his cruelty.

God's good loving kindness is the needy person's hope amid the return of cursing.

The enemy loved cursing until it clothed and filled him, and David asks that it stay with him. His own heart is wounded and his body weakened by fasting. He seeks deliverance for God's name, resting his need on the loving kindness that is good.

God's blessing gives His needy servant joy and a mouth ready for praise.

Mockers shake their heads at the man whose strength has faded. He asks for rescue they will know as God's hand and shame that will clothe the accusers. The Lord stands beside the needy against those judging his soul, giving him reason for public thanks.

Memorise

For he will stand at the right hand of the needy, to save him from those who judge his soul.

Psalm 109:31

Looking to Jesus in my life

Ask yourself in your heart, what merciless or deceitful words do I need to confess to the Lord Jesus?

David ends with the Lord standing at the needy person's right hand. The man who persecuted the brokenhearted faces judgment, while the wounded servant asks for saving kindness. This prayer gives cruelty its true weight before the God who judges.

Our lies, contempt and merciless words also leave us guilty before Him. Jesus accepted the curse in His people's place and died to ransom guilty sinners whose cruelty deserved the righteous Judge's condemnation. He rose to life. His finished sacrifice provides everything needed for their pardon, so that even a cruel accuser who comes to Him is pardoned.

Turn from the harm you have done and trust Jesus for mercy. He grants forgiveness to every sinner who seeks His mercy. Confess your false words and ask Him to make you kind to those whose hearts are already wounded. God hears the unjustly accused who trust Christ, and His saving care gives them reason to thank Him openly while awaiting His righteous judgment.

Parent's note

Tell your children that verses 6 to 20 ask God to judge a persecutor's life, household, possessions and remembered name. Explain verse 16's reason, his merciless pursuit of poor and brokenhearted people. Keep that judgment together with David's appeal to God's good loving kindness. Call each child to repent and trust Jesus for pardon, and pray for a new heart that a Christian home cannot provide.

Pray together

Now please close your time together in prayer. Ask God to judge deceit and cruelty, confess merciless words and thank Him for His care of the needy. Bring the heart question to Him. Every child can pray, so let each one say a short prayer if they want to.

But this happened so that the word may be fulfilled which was written in their law, ‘They hated me without a cause.’

John 15:25

Just and merciful Lord, please expose the lies and cruel words we have excused. Bring us to Jesus for the pardon His completed sacrifice secures. Defend those who are poor, wounded and falsely accused, and bring merciless persecutors to repentance. Teach Your people to trust Your judgment, show kindness to the brokenhearted and thank You openly for Your saving care. Amen.
