Psalms 12: The LORD speaks flawless words

Begin in prayer

Before we hear the contrast between flattering lips and God's pure words, let us ask Him to search our speech. Pray for honest hearts and trust in the truth of Jesus.

“Blessed be Yahweh, who has given rest to his people Israel, according to all that he promised. There has not failed one word of all his good promise, which he promised by Moses his servant.

1 Kings 8:56

Father in heaven, please open our eyes as we read Your Word, and help us to see Christ. Show us that the LORD speaks without deceit and hears the cries of the weak. Make us more like Jesus. And please bless our family as we worship You together. In Jesus' name, Amen.

See where we're going

David cries for help because faithful people are disappearing while lies and flattery spread. Proud speakers claim that their lips belong to themselves and that no lord rules over them. Then the LORD speaks, promising to arise because the weak are oppressed and the needy groan. His words are as pure as silver refined seven times, giving His people confidence in His keeping. Wickedness still walks openly when vile things are honoured, so the prayer ends with its eyes open to continuing evil.

As you read Psalms 12, look for the answers:

Reflect together

Key truth

The LORD's words are flawless, and He rises to protect the weak from deceit.

A double heart means that smooth words conceal an inward purpose different from what the neighbour hears. The proud tongue makes the larger claim that no lord has authority over it. God's answer comes from hearing the groans of people those words oppress. His promise of safety has the purity of silver from which every impurity has been removed. Refined seven times stresses that His speech contains no deceit. David can entrust the threatened people to the LORD's keeping because the One who speaks is faithful. The last verse still sees wickedness on every side, with vile things exalted. Confidence in God's promise can live beside honest grief over an evil generation.

How does Psalm 12 show us that the LORD's words are flawless, and He rises to protect the weak from deceit?

The LORD hears the groaning of the weak.

Human voices boast that their words will prevail. The weak person's groan reaches the LORD, who says He will arise for the oppressed. His intervention answers the arrogant claim that nobody rules over their speech. David asks the LORD to cut off flattering lips and the tongue that boasts.

The LORD's flawless words give reason to trust Him.

Silver is heated to remove what makes it impure. David uses that picture to praise the utter faithfulness of God's speech. The promised safety rests on a voice without the deceit that fills his neighbours' words.

Memorise

Yahweh’s words are flawless words, as silver refined in a clay furnace, purified seven times.

Psalm 12:6

Looking to Jesus in my life

Ask yourself in your heart, what dishonest words do I need to confess to Jesus?

The LORD says, “I will now arise,” because the weak are oppressed and the needy groan. His words bring safety where lying voices bring harm. Every promise from His mouth is pure.

We have used words to deceive and protect ourselves. Jesus spoke without deceit, then accepted the condemnation of His people when false witnesses stood against Him. His death on the cross paid for their sins, and God raised Him to life. That offering is complete and is enough to secure their forgiveness.

Turn from your sin and put your trust in Jesus. He receives those who confess their need and seek His mercy. Let His truthful words rule your tongue instead of claiming it belongs to you alone. The Lord who hears the groaning of the weak is worthy of your trust.

Parent's note

Tell your children that the LORD speaks without deceit and hears the cries of the weak. Please do not tell them they are saved just because they grew up in a Christian home. Call each child to turn from sin and trust Jesus, and pray that God would give them a new heart.

Pray together

Now please close your time together in prayer. Thank God for His flawless words and His care for the oppressed. Bring the heart question to Him. Every child can pray, so let each one say a short prayer if they want to.

Which of you convicts me of sin? If I tell the truth, why do you not believe me?

John 8:46

Faithful Lord, thank You that Your words contain no deceit. Forgive our flattering lips and divided hearts. Please lead us to trust Jesus, whose truthful words give life. Guard the weak from harmful speech, and help our family speak honestly and kindly before You through the coming week. Amen.
