Psalms 122: Glad worship seeks Jerusalem's peace

Begin in prayer

Before David's glad invitation to worship, let us remember the people who gather with us to hear God's Word. Ask the Lord to bring us to Jesus and teach us to seek their peace and good.

Yahweh of Armies says: “The fasts of the fourth fifth, seventh, and tenth months shall be for the house of Judah joy and gladness, and cheerful feasts. Therefore love truth and peace.”

Zechariah 8:19

Father in heaven, please open our eyes as we read Your Word, and help us to see Christ. Show us that the Lord gathers His people for thankful worship and teaches them to seek peace and one another's good. Make us more like Jesus. And please bless our family as we worship You together. In Jesus' name, Amen.

See where we're going

David remembers his gladness when others invited him to the Lord's house. Now their feet stand within Jerusalem's gates, in the city built compactly together. The Lord's tribes go up there according to Israel's ordinance to thank His name. Thrones for judgment belong there to David's house. David calls for prayer for Jerusalem's peace and prosperity, seeking its good for his companions and the Lord's house.

Reflect together

Key truth

The LORD gathers His people for thankful worship and righteous judgment, so they seek Jerusalem's peace and good.

The invitation to God's house gives David gladness before the shared feet stand inside Jerusalem's gates. Its compact buildings picture a gathered city where the tribes meet under the Lord's name. Their journey answers an ordinance given to Israel, so thanksgiving joins willing joy to commanded worship. David's house also holds thrones for judgment there, bringing the city's public justice beside its praise. Prayer for peace therefore reaches walls and palaces, seeking safety and wellbeing throughout the place where God's people gather. The blessing promises prosperity to those who love Jerusalem, while prayer seeks peace within its walls. David's brothers and companions give him a personal reason to speak that blessing. Love for the Lord's house gives him a further reason to seek the city's good, turning worship into concern for the people around it.

How does Psalm 122 show us that the LORD gathers His people for thankful worship and righteous judgment, so they seek Jerusalem's peace and good?

God gathers His people to thank His name with gladness.

David rejoices in the invitation to the Lord's house. The tribes come to Jerusalem according to Israel's ordinance. Their shared thanksgiving brings willing voices together under God's name.

God's worshipping city also has thrones for righteous judgment.

The thrones belong to David's house and are set for judgment. Worship takes place in a city whose public life needs justice. Its walls and palaces need the peace David asks God to give.

Love for God's house moves His people to seek their companions' good.

David asks those who love Jerusalem to pray for its peace. His brothers and companions matter in that prayer. For their sake and the Lord's house, he seeks the city's good.

Memorise

For the sake of the house of Yahweh our God, I will seek your good.

Psalm 122:9

Looking to Jesus in my life

Ask yourself in your heart, how am I seeking the good of the people the Lord Jesus gathers?

David says, “For the sake of the house of Yahweh our God, I will seek your good.” Gladness at the invitation to worship becomes prayer for peace. The people gathered in Jerusalem need righteous judgment and care for one another.

Our selfishness and sin have broken peace with God and harmed our neighbours. Jesus offered His life for His people, accepting their condemnation to bring guilty neighbours near to God and establish peace with Him. He rose from the grave. His finished obedience and sacrifice provide everything needed for their forgiveness and acceptance before the Father.

Turn from your sin and trust Jesus. Everyone who comes to Him is forgiven and welcomed. Ask Him to replace indifference with love for the people who worship beside you. The living King gathers His believing people beneath His faithful rule, giving them reason to seek one another's good and pray for peace.

Parent's note

Tell your children that the Lord gathers His people for thankful worship and teaches them to seek peace and one another's good. Please do not tell them they are saved just because they grew up in a Christian home. Call each child to turn from sin and trust Jesus, and pray that God would give them a new heart.

Pray together

Now please close your time together in prayer. Ask God for joyful thanksgiving, righteous judgment and peace among His gathered people. Bring the heart question to Him. Every child can pray, so let each one say a short prayer if they want to.

The glory which you have given me, I have given to them; that they may be one, even as we are one;

John 17:22

Lord God, thank You for calling Your people together to honour Your name. Please forgive our selfish treatment of one another and bring us to Jesus for peace with You. Give our children glad hearts to hear Your Word. Grant faithful judgment, peace and patient love to Your church, and help us seek the good of our companions. Amen.
