Psalms 127: The LORD builds and gives

Begin in prayer

Before Solomon speaks to builders, watchmen and parents, let us bring God the work and household we try to secure. Ask Him to lead us to Jesus and teach us thankful dependence on His gifts.

For you, Yahweh of Armies, the God of Israel, have revealed to your servant, saying, ‘I will build you a house.’ Therefore your servant has found in his heart to pray this prayer to you.

2 Samuel 7:27

Father in heaven, please open our eyes as we read Your Word, and help us to see Christ. Show us that the Lord makes work fruitful, gives His loved ones sleep and grants children as His gift. Make us more like Jesus. And please bless our family as we worship You together. In Jesus' name, Amen.

See where we're going

Solomon says that builders labour in vain unless the Lord builds the house. A watchman's guarding is also vain unless the Lord watches over the city. Rising early and staying late to eat the bread of toil cannot secure what God gives His loved ones with sleep. Children are called His heritage and reward. Children of youth are like arrows with a mighty man, strengthening the full household when enemies speak at the gate.

As you read Psalms 127, look for the answers:

Reflect together

Key truth

The LORD makes building and guarding fruitful, gives His loved ones sleep and grants children as His gift.

Solomon joins builders and a watchman under the same need, the Lord's work beneath their own. Their labour and guarding remain real, yet without Him their effort cannot achieve the security they seek. Early rising, late nights and toil extend that warning into the anxious worker's whole day. Sleep comes as God's gift to His loved ones, placing their rest beneath the care that continues beyond their activity. Children then appear as a heritage and reward received from the Lord. The arrow and full quiver picture the strength children of youth bring to a household's future. At the city gate, where public matters were heard, the household can face enemies without disappointment. The movement from building to children keeps home and city beneath the same truth, fruitful strength is received from God.

How does Psalm 127 show us that the LORD makes building and guarding fruitful, gives His loved ones sleep and grants children as His gift?

The LORD's building and guarding make human work fruitful.

The builders labour and the watchman guards. Their work is vain unless the Lord builds and watches over the city. Human effort therefore needs His care beneath every plan and task.

God gives His loved ones sleep that anxious toil cannot secure.

The worker rises early and stays up late to eat the bread of toil. Solomon calls that restless effort vain. Sleep is received from the Lord, giving His loved ones reason to depend on Him as they rest.

God gives children as a heritage that strengthens a household.

Children are called the Lord's heritage and the fruit of the womb His reward. Children of youth are compared with arrows. The full quiver pictures a household strengthened to speak with enemies at the gate.

Memorise

Behold, children are a heritage of Yahweh. The fruit of the womb is his reward.

Psalm 127:3

Looking to Jesus in my life

Ask yourself in your heart, what am I building without seeking the Lord Jesus and depending on His care?

Solomon warns, “Unless Yahweh builds the house, they labor in vain who build it.” Work and watching depend on the Lord. Even sleep and the children filling a household come as gifts from Him.

Our proud labour cannot build a righteous standing before God or remove our guilt. In Matthew 16 verse 18, Jesus declares that He will build His assembly. He gave His life as a ransom for His people, answering their guilt before God's judgment to bring them into His household. He rose from the grave. His completed sacrifice has paid their whole debt and secured their forgiveness.

Turn from proud independence and trust Jesus Christ. Everyone who comes to Him receives pardon. Ask Him to guide your work, quiet your grasp for control and teach you to receive His gifts thankfully. The LORD builds and guards, and He gives sleep to the ones He loves.

Parent's note

Tell your children that the Lord makes work fruitful, gives His loved ones sleep and grants children as His gift. Please do not tell them they are saved just because they grew up in a Christian home. Call each child to turn from sin and trust Jesus, and pray that God would give them a new heart.

Pray together

Now please close your time together in prayer. Thank God for His building, guarding, sleep and gift of children, and ask for dependent hearts. Bring the heart question to Him. Every child can pray, so let each one say a short prayer if they want to.

You didn’t choose me, but I chose you, and appointed you, that you should go and bear fruit, and that your fruit should remain; that whatever you will ask of the Father in my name, he may give it to you.

John 15:16

Generous Father, our work depends on Your building and our safety on Your care. Please forgive our proud independence and bring us to Jesus for acceptance with You. Teach us to labour faithfully and receive sleep with trust. Thank You for the children You give, and help our family care for them with grateful hearts. Amen.
