Psalms 130: Forgiveness and abundant redemption with God

Begin in prayer

Before the cry from the depths names the sins no one can answer for, let us stop hiding our guilt from God. Ask Him to lead us to Jesus and teach us hopeful reverence through His forgiveness.

To the Lord our God belong mercies and forgiveness; for we have rebelled against him;

Daniel 9:9

Father in heaven, please open our eyes as we read Your Word, and help us to see Christ. Show us that the Lord forgives sins and gives abundant redemption, teaching His people to fear Him and wait in hope. Make us more like Jesus. And please bless our family as we worship You together. In Jesus' name, Amen.

See where we're going

From the depths the singer cries to the Lord and asks Him to hear. If God kept a record of sins, no one could stand before Him. Yet forgiveness is with Him, giving reason to fear Him. The singer waits for the Lord and hopes in His word more eagerly than watchmen await morning. He calls Israel to share that hope because the Lord has loving kindness and abundant redemption, and will redeem them from all their sins.

As you read Psalms 130, look for the answers:

Reflect together

Key truth

The LORD forgives sins and gives abundant redemption, so His people fear Him and wait in hope upon His word.

The cry from the depths asks the Lord for attentive hearing, confessing need before Him. His question about a record of sins brings the danger into God's presence, where no guilty person could stand by personal merit. Forgiveness is found with that same Lord, and its purpose is reverent fear of Him. The singer therefore waits upon God and rests hope on His word while the answer is still awaited. Watchmen longing for morning give a picture of that eager, sustained expectation. Repeating the comparison carries the strength of a soul that wants the Lord more than a guard wants daylight. The personal prayer then turns outward, calling Israel to hope in the Lord's loving kindness and abundant redemption. His promised rescue reaches all their sins, making forgiveness the foundation of the people's shared hope.

How does Psalm 130 show us that the LORD forgives sins and gives abundant redemption, so His people fear Him and wait in hope upon His word?

The LORD's forgiveness is the guilty person's hope before His holy judgment.

The singer asks who could stand if God kept a record of sins. No answer of personal merit can meet that question. Forgiveness is with the Lord, and it leads His people to fear Him.

God's word gives His waiting servant hope through the long night.

The singer waits with his soul and hopes in God's word. Watchmen's longing for morning pictures the eagerness of that waiting. He seeks the Lord whose promise can sustain him before relief comes.

The LORD's abundant redemption gives all His people reason to hope.

Israel is called to hope in the Lord. Loving kindness and abundant redemption belong with Him. His promise reaches all their sins, giving the people a shared reason to depend on His mercy.

Memorise

But there is forgiveness with you, therefore you are feared.

Psalm 130:4

Looking to Jesus in my life

Ask yourself in your heart, what sin am I hiding instead of seeking forgiveness from the Lord Jesus?

The singer asks, “If you, Yah, kept a record of sins, Lord, who could stand?” Forgiveness is found with the Lord he fears. His waiting soul hopes in the word of abundant redemption.

We cannot stand before God's holy judgment with the record of our sins unanswered. Jesus paid His people's debt by dying for their sins, removing the guilt that no sinner could answer before God's judgment. He rose from death. His completed sacrifice has paid their whole debt, providing forgiveness for every sin and a righteous standing they could never earn.

Turn from hiding your sin and trust Jesus Christ. All who come to Him receive forgiveness. Confess what you have kept secret and ask Him for the reverence His mercy teaches. His people wait for the LORD and hope in His word, because with Him there is abundant redemption.

Parent's note

Tell your children that the Lord forgives sins and gives abundant redemption, teaching His people to fear Him and wait in hope. Please do not tell them they are saved just because they grew up in a Christian home. Call each child to turn from sin and trust Jesus, and pray that God would give them a new heart.

Pray together

Now please close your time together in prayer. Thank God for forgiveness and abundant redemption, and ask for reverent hope in His word. Bring the heart question to Him. Every child can pray, so let each one say a short prayer if they want to.

But the testimony which I receive is not from man. However, I say these things that you may be saved.

John 5:34

Merciful Lord, if You kept our sins against us we could never stand. Please bring us to Jesus for the forgiveness His completed sacrifice secures. Teach our children to confess honestly and trust Your Son. Give Your people reverent hearts, sustain those waiting in the depths and make Your abundant redemption the ground of our shared hope. Amen.
