Psalms 144: The LORD rescues and blesses
Begin in prayer
Before David blesses the Lord who trained his hands, let us consider the skills and provision we treat as our own security. Ask God to lead us to Jesus and make us thankful for His saving care.
He teaches my hands to war, so that my arms bend a bow of brass.
2 Samuel 22:35
Father in heaven, please open our eyes as we read Your Word, and help us to see Christ. Show us that the Lord trains and rescues His king and gives His people peace and provision. Make us more like Jesus. And please bless our family as we worship You together. In Jesus' name, Amen.
See where we're going
David blesses the Lord who trains his hands for war, gives refuge and subdues his people under him. Wondering why God cares for mankind, he compares human life to a breath and a passing shadow. He asks God to part the heavens, come down with lightning and rescue him from deep waters and deceitful foreigners. A new song will praise the God who saves kings and rescues David from the deadly sword. The plea against lying foreigners is repeated before a picture of flourishing sons and daughters, full barns, growing flocks and working oxen. Safe streets without invasion or distress complete the picture of a happy people whose God is the Lord.
As you read Psalms 144, look for the answers:
- Who trains David's hands for war? (verse 1)
- Whose God makes the people happy? (verse 15)
Reflect together
Key truth
The LORD trains and rescues His king, caring for frail people and giving a happy people peace and provision.
David's trained hands and fingers are gifts of the Lord whose care makes Him a rock, fortress and shield. Even the people beneath David's rule have been subdued by God. Human life is only a breath and passing shadow, making the Lord's attention a cause for wonder. The prayer turns that wonder into a request for God's mighty descent, scattering enemies and reaching down to rescue. Lying mouths and false right hands describe opponents whose words and pledges cannot be trusted. David promises a new song to the God who gives salvation to kings, while continuing to ask rescue from the same danger. The hope then widens from the king to sons, daughters, food, livestock and peaceful streets. Happiness belongs to the people receiving these gifts and knowing the Lord as their God.
How does Psalm 144 show us that the LORD trains and rescues His king, caring for frail people and giving a happy people peace and provision?
The LORD trains and protects His king while caring for frail human life.
David blesses God for trained hands, refuge and rule over his people. Human days pass like a breath and a shadow. God's care for such frailty makes His greatness a reason for humble wonder.
The LORD is sought for mighty rescue from deceitful enemies.
David asks God to come down and scatter the enemy with lightning. He needs rescue from great waters and lying hands. His promised new song thanks the God who saves kings while the prayer still seeks help.
The LORD's saving care opens toward the peace and provision of His people.
The song pictures sons as growing plants and daughters as carved pillars. Barns, flocks and oxen supply the people's needs. Safe streets complete the happiness of a people whose God is the Lord.
Memorise
Happy are the people who are in such a situation. Happy are the people whose God is Yahweh.
Psalm 144:15
Looking to Jesus in my life
Ask yourself in your heart, what skill or possession am I trusting more than the Lord Jesus?
David asks, “Stretch out your hand from above, rescue me”. His trained hands cannot replace the Lord's saving hand. The king's hope reaches toward children, full barns and peace among the people.
Our skill and possessions cannot answer the guilt of our sin before God. Jesus paid His people's debt through His death, securing their rescue from condemnation no earthly skill or possession could remove. He rose to life. His finished sacrifice provides everything needed for their forgiveness and acceptance, giving what no earthly strength can obtain.
Turn from proud self reliance and trust the Lord Jesus. Those who come to Him in faith receive forgiveness. Ask Him to make you thankful for the skills, children and daily provision He gives. Everyone who belongs to Him can depend on their living Saviour and seek the good of the people around them.
Parent's note
Tell your children that the Lord trains and rescues His king and gives His people peace and provision. Please do not tell them they are saved just because they grew up in a Christian home. Call each child to turn from sin and trust Jesus, and pray that God would give them a new heart.
Pray together
Now please close your time together in prayer. Thank God for rescue, useful skills and daily provision, and ask for peace and the good of His people. Bring the heart question to Him. Every child can pray, so let each one say a short prayer if they want to.
For I have come down from heaven, not to do my own will, but the will of him who sent me.
John 6:38
Lord our rock, thank You for the skills, children and provision You give. Please forgive our proud self reliance and bring us to Jesus for the pardon His finished sacrifice secures. Rescue those threatened by deceit and violence. Help our children flourish, provide for needy homes and give Your people peaceful lives that make Your goodness known. Amen.
