Psalms 146: Hope in the everlasting helping King
Begin in prayer
Before the song sets mortal princes beside the everlasting Lord, let us consider the power we have trusted. Ask God to lead us to Jesus and give us lasting hope in the King who helps the weak.
In the days of those kings shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom which shall never be destroyed, nor shall its sovereignty be left to another people; but it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand forever.
Daniel 2:44
Father in heaven, please open our eyes as we read Your Word, and help us to see Christ. Show us that the faithful Lord helps the vulnerable and reigns forever beyond mortal rulers. Make us more like Jesus. And please bless our family as we worship You together. In Jesus' name, Amen.
See where we're going
The singer calls his soul to praise the Lord throughout his life. He warns against trusting princes, whose breath departs and whose plans perish when they return to the earth. Happiness belongs to the person helped by Jacob's God, the Maker of all things who keeps truth forever. He gives justice to the oppressed, food to the hungry and freedom to prisoners. He opens blind eyes, raises the bowed down and loves the righteous. Foreigners, the fatherless and widows receive His preserving care, while He overturns the wicked way. Zion's God will reign forever through every generation, so the song ends with praise.
As you read Psalms 146, look for the answers:
- What happens to a prince's plans when he dies? (verse 4)
- How long will the Lord reign? (verse 10)
Reflect together
Key truth
The faithful LORD made all things, helps the vulnerable, overturns the wicked and reigns forever, giving hope beyond mortal rulers.
Lifelong praise belongs to the Lord because the hope He gives reaches beyond a mortal prince's last breath. Death brings that ruler's plans to an end, exposing the weakness of trust placed in human power. The God of Jacob made heaven, earth, sea and everything within them, and keeps His truth forever. His enduring rule brings justice, food and freedom to people who cannot secure these gifts for themselves. Blind eyes and bowed bodies receive His restoring care, while righteousness is loved. He preserves foreigners, orphans and widows, and overturns the wicked path. The lasting reign of Zion's God therefore gives every generation reason to hope and praise.
How does Psalm 146 show us that the faithful LORD made all things, helps the vulnerable, overturns the wicked and reigns forever, giving hope beyond mortal rulers?
The LORD gives a hope that outlasts human rulers and their plans.
The prince's breath departs and his thoughts perish. Trust placed in mortal power cannot carry hope beyond that end. Happiness belongs to the person whose help and hope rest in Jacob's God.
The faithful Maker acts for the oppressed, hungry and helpless.
God made every realm and keeps truth forever. He gives justice, food and freedom, opening blind eyes and raising the bowed down. The people with no power to secure their future receive His active care.
The LORD's everlasting reign preserves the vulnerable and overturns the wicked way.
Foreigners, orphans and widows are named within God's protection. The wicked path is turned upside down. Zion's God reigns through every generation, so His people have reason for lasting praise.
Memorise
Yahweh will reign forever; your God, O Zion, to all generations. Praise Yah!
Psalm 146:10
Looking to Jesus in my life
Ask yourself in your heart, what human power am I trusting more than the living Lord Jesus?
The song warns, “Don't put your trust in princes”. Their breath and plans will perish. The God who keeps truth forever helps the oppressed and reigns through every generation.
Our misplaced trust and sin leave us guilty before the King whose justice cannot fail. Jesus died for His people, enduring the judgment their sins deserved. He rose beyond the power of death. His finished sacrifice is enough for their forgiveness and lasting life, supplying what no mortal ruler could give.
Turn from false hopes and trust the Lord Jesus. Every person who comes to Him for mercy receives forgiveness. Ask Him to make your concern for the vulnerable reflect His care. The faithful LORD reigns forever, so His people put no trust in princes who die.
Parent's note
Tell your children that the faithful Lord helps the vulnerable and reigns forever beyond mortal rulers. Please do not tell them they are saved just because they grew up in a Christian home. Call each child to turn from sin and trust Jesus, and pray that God would give them a new heart.
Pray together
Now please close your time together in prayer. Praise the everlasting King and ask for hope in Him and care for the people He protects. Bring the heart question to Him. Every child can pray, so let each one say a short prayer if they want to.
This is the bread which came down out of heaven — not as our fathers ate the manna, and died. He who eats this bread will live forever.”
John 6:58
Everlasting King, please forgive our misplaced hope and bring us to Jesus for the pardon His finished sacrifice secures. Teach our children to trust Your faithful reign. Feed the hungry, free those unjustly confined, preserve the stranger and uphold orphans and widows. Make Your people ready to care for the weak and praise You through all our days. Amen.
