Psalms 149: The King crowns humble people
Begin in prayer
Before the saints sing of salvation and written judgment, let us bring God the pride that wants honour by its own strength. Ask Him to lead us to Jesus and give us humble joy beneath His rule.
Sing, daughter of Zion! Shout, Israel! Be glad and rejoice with all your heart, daughter of Jerusalem.
Zephaniah 3:14
Father in heaven, please open our eyes as we read Your Word, and help us to see Christ. Show us that the Lord delights in His people, crowns the humble with salvation and gives His saints honour. Make us more like Jesus. And please bless our family as we worship You together. In Jesus' name, Amen.
See where we're going
The Lord's saints are called to sing a new song in their assembly. Israel should rejoice in its Maker and King with dancing, tambourine and harp. The Lord takes pleasure in His people and crowns the humble with salvation. His saints are to rejoice in honour and sing for joy even upon their beds. High praise belongs in their mouths while a sword in their hands executes vengeance and punishment upon the nations. Kings and nobles are bound, and the saints share the honour of carrying out the written judgment.
As you read Psalms 149, look for the answers:
- With what does the Lord crown the humble? (verse 4)
- What governs the judgment His saints carry out? (verse 9)
Reflect together
Key truth
The LORD delights in His people, crowns the humble with salvation and gives His saints honour under His written judgment.
The gathered people sing as those who belong to the Maker they also call their King. Dance, tambourine and harp bring their shared joy into the praise His name deserves. God's pleasure in His people gives that joy a ground beyond their own strength. He crowns the humble with salvation, making rescue the honour He gives to dependent people. Praise reaches from the assembly to their beds, filling the public and private life of His saints. The sword and chains then name vengeance against nations and punishment of their rulers under God's written judgment. That honour is shared by all His saints, whose action remains governed by what He has written. First Corinthians 6 verse 2 says that the saints will judge the world, showing the place Christ's people share in His righteous victory.
How does Psalm 149 show us that the LORD delights in His people, crowns the humble with salvation and gives His saints honour under His written judgment?
The LORD delights in His people and crowns humble dependence with salvation.
Israel rejoices in its Maker and King. The reason is His pleasure in His people. Salvation is the crown He gives the humble, making received rescue their honour.
The LORD deserves His saints' joyful praise in assembly and at rest.
A new song belongs among the gathered saints. Instruments and dancing answer their King's goodness. The same people sing upon their beds, carrying joy into their private rest.
The LORD gives His saints honour in carrying out His written judgment.
Sword and chains bring vengeance upon nations and bind their kings and nobles. The judgment is written, giving their action its received rule. All His saints share this honour under the King they praise.
Memorise
For Yahweh takes pleasure in his people. He crowns the humble with salvation.
Psalm 149:4
Looking to Jesus in my life
Ask yourself in your heart, what pride am I holding instead of humbly seeking salvation from the Lord Jesus?
The song says, βHe crowns the humble with salvation.β The King takes pleasure in His people and gives them honour. Their joy stands beside His written judgment against the nations.
Our pride and rebellion deserve that King's righteous punishment. Jesus bore the judgment of His people's sins and died to secure their salvation. He rose again. His completed obedience and sacrifice have paid their whole debt, providing forgiveness and honour they could never win by their own power.
Turn from pride and trust Jesus Christ for salvation. All who come to Him receive the pardon His finished work secures. Ask Him to make His saving goodness the ground of your joy and His Word the rule of your life. Those who belong to Him can praise their living King and depend on His righteous victory over every enemy.
Parent's note
Tell your children that God's people rejoice in received salvation and honour Him under His written judgment. Verses 6 to 9 keep the sword, punishment and bound rulers within that judgment. Call each child to turn from pride and trust Jesus. Pray for new hearts, since life in a Christian home cannot provide salvation.
Pray together
Now please close your time together in prayer. Thank God for crowning the humble with salvation and ask for joyful obedience beneath His written judgment. Bring the heart question to Him. Every child can pray, so let each one say a short prayer if they want to.
You are my friends, if you do whatever I command you.
John 15:14
Our Maker and King, please forgive our proud desire for honour and bring us to Jesus for the salvation His completed sacrifice secures. Give our children humble hearts that trust Your Son. Fill Your people with thankful joy in public worship and private rest. Rule our lives by Your Word and bring every enemy beneath Your righteous judgment. Amen.
