Psalms 15: The holy LORD requires truth

Begin in prayer

Before we ask who may dwell with the holy Lord, let us bring Him our words and hidden motives. Ask Him to show us the righteousness of Jesus and make us truthful before Him.

He will keep the feet of his holy ones, but the wicked shall be put to silence in darkness; for no man shall prevail by strength.

1 Samuel 2:9

Father in heaven, please open our eyes as we read Your Word, and help us to see Christ. Show us that the holy LORD requires truth in our hearts and lives. Make us more like Jesus. And please bless our family as we worship You together. In Jesus' name, Amen.

See where we're going

David asks who may dwell in the LORD's sanctuary and live on His holy hill. The answer describes a person whose outward conduct agrees with truth in the heart. He refuses slander and harm, honours those who fear the LORD, and keeps a costly oath. He will neither exploit others through lending nor accept a bribe against the innocent. The promise of unshaken standing belongs to the person who lives this way before God.

As you read Psalms 15, look for the answers:

Reflect together

Key truth

The holy LORD receives those who walk uprightly, speak truth, and refuse to harm their neighbour.

The sanctuary and holy hill make nearness to God the question behind every requirement. David asks the LORD Himself who may live there. The answer joins conduct, deeds and heart, so religious speech cannot cover a dishonest life. A neighbour's name must be protected from slander, and friendship must never become an opportunity for harm. The vile man is despised, while those who fear the LORD are honoured. Keeping an oath even when it hurts shows that truthfulness has a cost the righteous person accepts. Refusing usury and bribes guards the needy and the innocent from gain made through injustice.

How does Psalm 15 show us that the holy LORD receives those who walk uprightly, speak truth, and refuse to harm their neighbour?

The holy LORD requires truth from the heart.

Walking blamelessly and doing right belong beside speaking truth inwardly. The person who asks to dwell with God cannot divide worship from the life God sees. The LORD sees the deceit beneath an upright appearance and requires truth within.

The LORD's people refuse harm even when honesty costs them.

The neighbour's reputation, the costly oath and the innocent person's case are all placed under God's judgment. Truth must govern what we say, whom we honour and how we use money. Loss is no reason to sell the truth or exploit someone who needs help.

Memorise

Yahweh, who shall dwell in your sanctuary? Who shall live on your holy hill? He who walks blamelessly does what is right, and speaks truth in his heart;

Psalm 15:1-2

Looking to Jesus in my life

Ask yourself in your heart, what am I hiding behind good words instead of confessing to Jesus?

David asks, “Who shall live on your holy hill?” The holy God answers with truth in the heart and righteousness in the life. That answer searches our words, our promises and the way we treat the weak.

Jesus alone has walked this way without sin. He kept God's will at the cost of His life and bore the punishment of His people on the cross. He was raised in glory, with the whole debt of their guilt paid. His completed righteousness and sacrifice are enough to bring them into God's presence.

Turn from your sin and put your trust in Jesus. All who rest on Him receive forgiveness and acceptance through His righteousness. Then ask Him to make your speech and conduct agree. Nearness to this holy Lord is a gift that changes the life of those He receives.

Parent's note

Tell your children that the holy LORD requires truth in our hearts and lives. Please do not tell them they are saved just because they grew up in a Christian home. Call each child to turn from sin and trust Jesus, and pray that God would give them a new heart.

Pray together

Now please close your time together in prayer. Thank God for His holiness and the righteousness found in His Son. Bring the heart question to Him. Every child can pray, so let each one say a short prayer if they want to.

They are not of the world even as I am not of the world.

John 17:16

Holy Lord, You see our hearts and hear every word. Please forgive our deceit and bring us to trust Jesus for righteousness. Make our conduct agree with what we say. Help us keep our promises, guard our neighbour's name and refuse unfair gain this week, for Your glory. Amen.
