Psalms 23: The LORD shepherds His people

Begin in prayer

Before we hear how the LORD shepherds His people, let us bring Him our need for guidance and rest. Ask for hearts that hear the good Shepherd and rest in His faithful care.

As a shepherd seeks out his flock in the day that he is among his sheep that are scattered abroad, so will I seek out my sheep; and I will deliver them out of all places where they have been scattered in the cloudy and dark day.

Ezekiel 34:12

Father in heaven, please open our eyes as we read Your Word, and help us to see Christ. Show us that the LORD shepherds those who belong to Him and stays with them through danger. Make us more like Jesus. And please bless our family as we worship You together. In Jesus' name, Amen.

See where we're going

David calls the LORD his shepherd and finds that His care supplies all he needs. God brings him to pasture and water, restores his soul and guides him along righteous paths for His name's sake. The way passes through the shadow of death, yet God's presence, rod and staff give comfort. The picture then becomes a prepared table, welcome with oil and an overflowing cup while enemies remain in view. Goodness and loving kindness follow David through his life, and he expects to dwell in the LORD's house forever.

Reflect together

Key truth

The LORD shepherds His people, stays with them in danger, and keeps them in His goodness forever.

David had cared for sheep, and here he speaks as one who depends on the LORD's shepherd care. Pasture and quiet water show provision and rest, while the restored soul needs direction along righteous paths. God's own name is the reason for this faithful guidance, so His honour is joined to His care. The valley remains on the path, yet David now speaks directly to the Shepherd who is with him there. Rod and staff picture protection and guidance, giving comfort through the danger rather than promising a road without it. At the table the LORD becomes a generous host who welcomes His guest despite the presence of enemies. Oil marks that welcome, and the overflowing cup shows plenty under the Host's care. The final hope rests on God's goodness and loving kindness lasting through every day and bringing His servant home.

How does Psalm 23 show us that the LORD shepherds His people, stays with them in danger, and keeps them in His goodness forever?

The LORD provides and guides for His name's sake.

The sheep depend on their shepherd for food, water and the way ahead. David credits the LORD with restoring his soul and guiding him in righteousness. God's faithful name gives him reason to trust that care.

The LORD's presence gives comfort through danger.

David walks through the dark valley with the Shepherd beside him. Rod and staff reassure him that the One who leads can also protect. God's presence makes the difference while the danger is still real.

The LORD's goodness keeps His servant forever.

The prepared table gives a place of welcome while enemies look on. Anointing oil and an overflowing cup picture the generosity of the Host. David's hope reaches through all his days to dwelling in the LORD's house.

Memorise

Yahweh is my shepherd: I shall lack nothing.

Psalm 23:1

Looking to Jesus in my life

Ask yourself in your heart, where am I refusing the guidance of Jesus the good Shepherd?

David says, “Yahweh is my shepherd”. Green pasture, a dark valley and a table before enemies all stand within that Shepherd's care. The comfort is that the LORD Himself is with His servant.

Jesus calls Himself the good Shepherd who lays down His life for the sheep in John 10 verse 11. At the cross He bore the punishment of His people's sins, dying in their place. God raised the Shepherd who had given His life for the sheep. His completed saving work is enough to bring every wandering sinner who trusts Him home.

Turn from sin and come to Him in faith. He gives forgiveness and life to everyone who depends on Him. Ask Him to lead your steps along righteous paths, including the hard ones. His sheep are held by the Shepherd whose goodness and loving kindness will never fail them.

Parent's note

Tell your children that the LORD shepherds those who belong to Him and stays with them through danger. Please do not tell them they are saved just because they grew up in a Christian home. Call each child to turn from sin and trust Jesus, and pray that God would give them a new heart.

Pray together

Now please close your time together in prayer. Thank God for His shepherd care and His lasting goodness and loving kindness. Bring the heart question to Him. Every child can pray, so let each one say a short prayer if they want to.

even as the Father knows me, and I know the Father. I lay down my life for the sheep.

John 10:15

Good Shepherd, we need Your guidance, protection and restoring care. Please turn us from wandering and bring us to trust Jesus for forgiveness and life. Thank You for His sacrifice and resurrection. Lead us in righteous paths this week, and teach us to trust Your presence when the way is dark. Amen.
