Psalms 26: Truthful worship before the LORD
Begin in prayer
Before we bring words of praise to the LORD, let us ask Him to examine our hearts. Pray for truth in our lives and mercy through Jesus, so our worship honours the God who sees us.
then hear in heaven, your dwelling place, and forgive, and act, and give to every man according to all his ways, whose heart you know; (for you, even you only, know the hearts of all the children of men;)
1 Kings 8:39
Father in heaven, please open our eyes as we read Your Word, and help us to see Christ. Show us that truthful worship belongs with an upright life and a continuing need for mercy. Make us more like Jesus. And please bless our family as we worship You together. In Jesus' name, Amen.
See where we're going
David asks the LORD to judge him and examine his heart, joining his claim of integrity to trust in God. God's loving kindness is before his eyes, and he has walked in His truth rather than joining deceitful company. He washes his hands in innocence and approaches the altar to give thanks and tell God's wondrous deeds. Loving the house where God's glory dwells, he asks to be spared the end of violent men whose hands hold bribes. His resolve to walk in integrity remains a plea for redemption and mercy, ending with praise in the congregations.
As you read Psalms 26, look for the answers:
- What does David ask God to examine? (verse 2)
- What does he still ask while resolving to walk in integrity? (verse 11)
Reflect together
Key truth
The LORD searches hearts, receives truthful worship, and gives mercy to those who walk in integrity.
David brings a disputed cause to the Judge who can examine his heart and mind. Integrity here means sincerity in his walk, while his request for mercy shows that he still needs redemption. Keeping God's loving kindness before his eyes gives a reason for walking in His truth. That loyalty includes refusing the deceitful, the hypocrites and the assembly of evildoers he hates. Washing his hands in innocence joins the life he lives to the worship he brings at God's altar. Thanksgiving is his purpose, because he loves the place where the LORD's glory dwells. The fear of sharing the wicked person's end names violence and bribery as sins under God's judgment. His foot now stands on even ground, and he blesses the LORD among the congregation.
How does Psalm 26 show us that the LORD searches hearts, receives truthful worship, and gives mercy to those who walk in integrity?
The LORD examines the heart behind the worship.
David invites testing of his heart and mind before God. His trust and his walk must agree when the righteous Judge hears his cause. God's loving kindness gives him reason to keep walking in truth.
The LORD receives truthful praise from an upright life.
David refuses the company of deceitful and violent men instead of sharing their schemes. His washed hands express the innocence with which he approaches the altar. He wants to give thanks where God's glory dwells, while still asking for redemption and mercy.
Memorise
But as for me, I will walk in my integrity. Redeem me, and be merciful to me.
Psalm 26:11
Looking to Jesus in my life
Ask yourself in your heart, what dishonesty am I hiding while trying to worship Jesus?
David says, “Redeem me, and be merciful to me.” The man who asks God to examine his integrity still knows he needs mercy. Clean hands at the altar belong with a truthful heart before the Lord.
Our worship cannot conceal our guilt from that searching God. Jesus lived without deceit, then died in His people's place and bore the punishment of their sins. He rose to life. Christ has fully secured His people's righteous acceptance, so their welcome before God rests on the obedience and offering He completed.
Turn from sin and trust Jesus for the mercy you need. He forgives those who rely on His saving work. Bring Him the deceit you have hidden behind religious words. Ask Him to make your life and thanksgiving agree, so that you honour the Lord whose eyes search the heart.
Parent's note
Tell your children that truthful worship belongs with an upright life and a continuing need for mercy. Please do not tell them they are saved just because they grew up in a Christian home. Call each child to turn from sin and trust Jesus, and pray that God would give them a new heart.
Pray together
Now please close your time together in prayer. Thank God that He searches hearts and receives worship through His mercy. Bring the heart question to Him. Every child can pray, so let each one say a short prayer if they want to.
He who sent me is with me. The Father hasn’t left me alone, for I always do the things that are pleasing to him.”
John 8:29
Lord, You know what lies behind our worship and our words. Please expose our deceit and bring us to trust Jesus for mercy. Thank You for His perfect obedience and completed sacrifice. Keep us from dishonest company and unfair gain, and give us thankful hearts that honour You through this week. Amen.
