Psalms 28: The LORD hears and shepherds
Begin in prayer
Before we bring our petitions to God, let us ask Him to search the heart behind our words. Pray that He would expose our deceit, lead us to Jesus and show us His lasting shepherd care.
God is my rock in whom I take refuge; my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my high tower, and my refuge. My savior, you save me from violence.
2 Samuel 22:3
Father in heaven, please open our eyes as we read Your Word, and help us to see Christ. Show us that the LORD judges deceit and shepherds the people He saves. Make us more like Jesus. And please bless our family as we worship You together. In Jesus' name, Amen.
See where we're going
David cries to the LORD his rock, fearing that silence would leave him like those descending to the pit. He lifts his hands toward God's Most Holy Place and asks to be spared the end of the wicked. Their peaceful words conceal mischief, and David asks that their deeds receive the judgment they deserve. The song turns to blessing because the LORD has heard, becoming strength and shield to the trusting heart. David then asks the saving stronghold of His anointed to bless His people, shepherd them and carry them forever.
As you read Psalms 28, look for the answers:
- What is hidden beneath the wicked people's peaceful words? (verse 3)
- What does David ask God to do for His people? (verse 9)
Reflect together
Key truth
The LORD hears His people, judges deceit, and shepherds His inheritance forever.
The Rock is the One David calls upon because his life depends on an answer from God. Raised hands toward the Most Holy Place express his need before the God who dwells among His people. His fear of being taken with the wicked includes neighbours who cover evil intentions with peaceful words. Asking repayment according to their deeds leaves the verdict with the Judge who knows the truth beneath their speech. Their refusal to respect God's works brings the sentence that He will break them down and never build them up. The answered plea then gives the trusting heart reason for joy and a song of thanks. The LORD is the strength both of His people and of the anointed king whose safety concerns them. David's final prayer gathers them into four requests, asking God to save, bless, shepherd and bear them up forever.
How does Psalm 28 show us that the LORD hears His people, judges deceit, and shepherds His inheritance forever?
The LORD judges the deceit that peaceful words conceal.
David names the mischief hidden beneath neighbourly speech. He asks God to repay deeds according to what they deserve. Those who disregard the LORD's works face being broken down without rebuilding.
The LORD hears His people and carries them forever.
David blesses the Lord because his petitions have been heard. Trust has received help, so the heart rejoices and gives thanks in song. The prayer then asks that all God's inheritance be saved, blessed and shepherded forever.
Memorise
Save your people, and bless your inheritance. Be their shepherd also, and bear them up forever.
Psalm 28:9
Looking to Jesus in my life
Ask yourself in your heart, what hidden mischief must I confess to Jesus beneath my peaceful words?
David asks God to shepherd His people and “bear them up forever.” The prayer has moved from fear of silence to thanksgiving for a heard petition. The LORD who judges deceit also carries His own inheritance.
We have hidden sinful intentions beneath words that sound harmless. Jesus bore the punishment of His people's sins and died in their place at the cross. He rose again. Their forgiveness and lasting care rest upon an accomplished rescue that has fully answered the guilt of those whose sins He carried.
Turn from sin and trust this faithful Savior. He grants pardon to all who seek mercy through His finished work. Bring the heart behind your words into His light. The people He saves can ask Him to shepherd them with confidence that His care will endure forever.
Parent's note
Tell your children that the LORD judges deceit and shepherds the people He saves. Please do not tell them they are saved just because they grew up in a Christian home. Call each child to turn from sin and trust Jesus, and pray that God would give them a new heart.
Pray together
Now please close your time together in prayer. Thank God for hearing His people and carrying His inheritance forever. Bring the heart question to Him. Every child can pray, so let each one say a short prayer if they want to.
Until now, you have asked nothing in my name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be made full.
John 16:24
Lord God, Rock and Shepherd of Your people, thank You for hearing their cries. Please expose the mischief we hide and bring us to trust Jesus for pardon. Help us speak from honest hearts. Save and bless Your people, and carry those who feel weak through this week's troubles by Your faithful care. Amen.
