Psalms 29: The LORD rules above the storm

Begin in prayer

Before we listen to the storm in David's song, let us remember the eternal King whose voice fills it. Ask Him to give us reverence for His power and peace through Jesus.

But Yahweh is in his holy temple. Let all the earth be silent before him!”

Habakkuk 2:20

Father in heaven, please open our eyes as we read Your Word, and help us to see Christ. Show us that the LORD rules over creation and blesses His people with strength and peace. Make us more like Jesus. And please bless our family as we worship You together. In Jesus' name, Amen.

See where we're going

David calls the mighty to give the LORD the glory and strength due to His name and worship Him in holiness. God's voice thunders over the waters with power and majesty, breaking the cedars of Lebanon. Mountains skip before Him, lightning flashes, and the wilderness of Kadesh shakes beneath His voice. The deer give birth and the forests are stripped bare, while His temple answers with glory. The LORD sits enthroned as King forever, and the God whose power fills the storm gives His people strength and peace.

As you read Psalms 29, look for the answers:

Reflect together

Key truth

The LORD reigns over the storm and gives His people strength and peace.

Ascribing glory means recognising what already belongs to the LORD, whose strength needs no gift from His creatures. The repeated voice of the LORD makes the thunder a summons to worship the God of glory. Lebanon's cedars and its mountains picture created strength that cannot stand unmoved before Him. Sirion is another name for Mount Hermon, included among the heights that skip like young animals. The voice reaches the wilderness, the deer and the forests, so nothing in creation lies outside His power. The temple's answer is glory, fitting the holiness with which the song began. The LORD was enthroned at the Flood and remains King forever, ruling the waters that no human being can master. His final gift of peace comes from that same power, bringing strength and blessing to His people.

How does Psalm 29 show us that the LORD reigns over the storm and gives His people strength and peace?

The LORD's mighty voice calls creation to honour Him.

The song begins by giving God the glory due to His name. Thunder, lightning and shaking forests display the majesty of His voice. Even the strongest parts of creation cannot claim independence from their King.

The eternal King gives His people strength and peace.

The storm never removes the LORD from His throne. His kingship was sure at the Flood and continues forever. His power becomes a blessing to His people, who receive strength and peace from Him.

Memorise

Yahweh will give strength to his people. Yahweh will bless his people with peace.

Psalm 29:11

Looking to Jesus in my life

Ask yourself in your heart, where do I fear created power more than trusting Jesus?

David declares, “Yahweh sits as King forever.” The voice that breaks cedars and shakes the wilderness belongs to the Lord who gives His people peace. Creation's strength is small before its King.

Our rebellion has made us guilty before this holy God. Jesus died in His people's place, bearing the punishment that His justice required. Jesus was raised to life, and His sacrifice has answered their guilt once for all. Nothing is missing from the peace His finished work provides.

Turn from sin and place your hope in Jesus. Through faith in the risen Jesus, guilty sinners receive forgiveness before the God whose voice they have resisted. Ask Him for strength to honour His name when the world's powers frighten you. The eternal King remains on His throne, and His people can rest in the peace He gives.

Parent's note

Tell your children that the LORD rules over creation and blesses His people with strength and peace. Please do not tell them they are saved just because they grew up in a Christian home. Call each child to turn from sin and trust Jesus, and pray that God would give them a new heart.

Pray together

Now please close your time together in prayer. Thank God that the eternal King gives His people strength and peace. Bring the heart question to Him. Every child can pray, so let each one say a short prayer if they want to.

Father, glorify your name!” Then there came a voice out of the sky, saying, “I have both glorified it, and will glorify it again.”

John 12:28

King forever, Your voice is mighty and Your name deserves all glory. Please bring us to trust Jesus for forgiveness and peace with You. Thank You that His finished work is enough. When powerful things frighten us this week, teach us to worship You and depend on the strength You give. Amen.
