Psalms 30: The LORD turns mourning to gladness
Begin in prayer
Before we thank God for the comforts we enjoy, let us remember how much we need His favour. Ask Him to expose our self confidence, bring us to Jesus and give us thankful hearts.
After two days he will revive us. On the third day he will raise us up, and we will live before him.
Hosea 6:2
Father in heaven, please open our eyes as we read Your Word, and help us to see Christ. Show us that the LORD's favour gives His people joy and calls them to lasting praise. Make us more like Jesus. And please bless our family as we worship You together. In Jesus' name, Amen.
See where we're going
David's song for the dedication of the temple thanks the LORD for raising him up and preserving his life. He calls God's saints to praise the holy name, contrasting momentary anger with favour that lasts a lifetime. Looking back, he remembers claiming in prosperity that he would never be moved. God's hidden face troubled him, so he cried for mercy and asked how the dust could declare God's truth. The LORD changed his mourning clothes for gladness, giving him life so that his heart would sing and give thanks forever.
As you read Psalms 30, look for the answers:
- What had David said in his prosperity? (verse 6)
- Why did God turn his mourning into gladness? (verses 11 and 12)
Reflect together
Key truth
The LORD turns His people's mourning into gladness so they may praise Him forever.
David gives the LORD credit for lifting, healing and keeping him alive, so rescue becomes a reason to exalt God. His thanksgiving reaches the congregation, calling God's saints to praise His holy name. His contrast between anger and lasting favour concerns the Lord's dealings with His own people, whose sorrow gives way to joy. The boast of never being moved belongs to the prosperous self confidence that his trouble exposed. God's favour had made him strong, so the hiding of God's face revealed how dependent he remained. His plea about the dust asks for life to continue praising God among the living. Sackcloth was coarse clothing worn in grief, making the change into gladness visible in the picture. The rescue has a purpose beyond relief, that his heart should sing to the LORD and never fall silent in thanksgiving.
How does Psalm 30 show us that the LORD turns His people's mourning into gladness so they may praise Him forever?
The LORD rescues His people and gives them reason to praise.
David remembers being kept alive when his foes might have rejoiced over him. He calls God's saints to thank the holy name together. The Lord's lasting favour gives His people hope beyond the night of weeping.
The LORD exposes self confidence and turns sorrow into gladness.
Prosperity had led David to speak as though his security could never fail. The hiding of God's face brought him back to prayer for mercy. God clothed him with gladness so that his restored life would become lasting praise.
Memorise
For his anger is but for a moment. His favor is for a lifetime. Weeping may stay for the night, but joy comes in the morning.
Psalm 30:5
Looking to Jesus in my life
Ask yourself in your heart, what comfort has made me forget my need of Jesus?
David confesses, “when you hid your face, I was troubled.” The prosperity that seemed secure could never replace the LORD's favour. His restored joy becomes a life of praise to the God who heard him.
Our sin brings guilt that no comfortable life can remove. Jesus accepted the punishment of His people's rebellion and died in their place at the cross. He rose to life. He has done everything needed for His people's pardon and peace, giving the rescued a lasting reason for thankful praise.
Turn from sin and seek your refuge in Jesus. He forgives all who depend on Him. Bring Him the self confidence that prosperity has encouraged, and ask for a thankful heart. His people may still pass through nights of weeping, yet His lasting favour gives them reason to hope and sing.
Parent's note
Tell your children that the LORD's favour gives His people joy and calls them to lasting praise. Please do not tell them they are saved just because they grew up in a Christian home. Call each child to turn from sin and trust Jesus, and pray that God would give them a new heart.
Pray together
Now please close your time together in prayer. Thank God for the mercy that turns His people's mourning into gladness. Bring the heart question to Him. Every child can pray, so let each one say a short prayer if they want to.
When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. The disciples therefore were glad when they saw the Lord.
John 20:20
Merciful Lord, thank You for the joy and help You give Your people. Forgive the self confidence that grows when life feels secure. Please bring us to trust Jesus and rest in His finished work. Sustain those who are weeping, and teach us to thank You through this coming week. Amen.
