Psalms 33: The LORD speaks and stands firm

Begin in prayer

Before we measure our strength against our troubles, let us remember the God whose word made the heavens. Ask Him to turn our hope toward Jesus and teach us to wait for His faithful care.

How great are his signs! and how mighty are his wonders! his kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and his dominion is from generation to generation.

Daniel 4:3

Father in heaven, please open our eyes as we read Your Word, and help us to see Christ. Show us that the LORD's faithful word rules all things and His people wait for His loving kindness. Make us more like Jesus. And please bless our family as we worship You together. In Jesus' name, Amen.

See where we're going

The righteous are called to praise the LORD with joyful singing and skilful music because His word is right and His works are faithful. His word made the heavens, and His command holds the waters, calling the whole earth to stand in awe. The nations' plans fail before the counsel of the LORD, which stands through all generations. Looking from heaven, He sees every person and considers the works of hearts He has formed. Kings, warriors and horses cannot secure salvation, while His eye watches those who fear Him and hope in His loving kindness. The waiting congregation answers with trust, joy and a prayer for that loving kindness to rest upon them.

As you read Psalms 33, look for the answers:

Reflect together

Key truth

The LORD's faithful word creates and rules, and His loving kindness keeps those who hope in Him.

Praise fits the upright because the God they worship speaks truth and acts faithfully. His love of righteousness and justice belongs with the loving kindness that fills the earth. The heavens were made by His word, and all their army by the breath of His mouth. The heavens and gathered waters therefore give the whole world reason to revere Him. That same authority brings human counsel to nothing while His own purposes stand across the generations. The nation called blessed belongs to Him because He has chosen a people for His inheritance. His view from heaven reaches inside the hearts He forms, so no ruler or ordinary person escapes His knowledge. An army, a strong warrior or a powerful horse cannot guarantee rescue from death or sustain life through famine. Those who fear Him therefore wait for His help, placing their hope in the loving kindness they ask Him to show.

How does Psalm 33 show us that the LORD's faithful word creates and rules, and His loving kindness keeps those who hope in Him?

The LORD's faithful word made creation and rules the nations.

The heavens exist because God spoke, and the waters remain under His command. Human plans cannot overthrow the counsel that stands forever. His power calls every nation to stand in awe of Him.

The LORD watches those who hope in His loving kindness.

The God who forms hearts also considers every person's works. Armies and horses cannot provide the rescue His watching care provides. Those who fear Him wait for Him as their help and shield, rejoicing in His holy name.

Memorise

The counsel of Yahweh stands fast forever, the thoughts of his heart to all generations.

Psalm 33:11

Looking to Jesus in my life

Ask yourself in your heart, what strength am I trusting more than the Lord Jesus?

The singers confess, β€œHe is our help and our shield.” The Lord who made the heavens also sees every human heart. Neither a king's army nor a strong horse can replace His saving care.

He sees the sin hidden in our own hearts. Jesus died in His people's place, bearing the punishment their rebellion deserved. The Father raised Jesus to life, vindicating the Son whose saving purpose stands firm. The Saviour has accomplished their righteous acceptance, providing everything needed for guilty people to stand welcomed before God.

Turn from sin and trust Jesus. He grants forgiveness to all who depend on Him. Bring Him the earthly strength you have treated as a guarantee of safety. The faithful Lord remains the help and joy of everyone who trusts Him, giving His people hope through His lasting kindness.

Parent's note

Tell your children that the LORD's faithful word rules all things and His people wait for His loving kindness. Please do not tell them they are saved just because they grew up in a Christian home. Call each child to turn from sin and trust Jesus, and pray that God would give them a new heart.

Pray together

Now please close your time together in prayer. Thank God for His faithful word and the loving kindness in which His people hope. Bring the heart question to Him. Every child can pray, so let each one say a short prayer if they want to.

All things were made through him. Without him was not anything made that has been made.

John 1:3

Lord of heaven and earth, Your word is right and Your purposes stand forever. Please forgive our trust in earthly strength and lead us to Jesus. Thank You that His saving work is complete. Teach us to fear You, wait for Your help and rejoice in Your loving kindness this week. Amen.
