Psalms 4: God gives peace in distress

Begin in prayer

Before we bring this day's troubles into the night, let us ask for the gladness God gives. Pray that He would teach us to seek peace through Jesus and trust His care.

In that day I will make a covenant for them with the animals of the field, and with the birds of the sky, and with the creeping things of the ground. I will break the bow, the sword, and the battle out of the land, and will make them lie down safely.

Hosea 2:18

Father in heaven, please open our eyes as we read Your Word, and help us to see Christ. Show us that the LORD gives His people gladness and peace when they are distressed. Make us more like Jesus. And please bless our family as we worship You together. In Jesus' name, Amen.

See where we're going

David cries to the God of his righteousness for relief and mercy. People are turning his glory into dishonour, loving empty things and chasing lies. He calls them to stand in awe, search their hearts and trust the LORD. When many ask who will show them good, David asks for the light of God's face. The gladness God gives exceeds a rich harvest, and David can lie down in peace because the LORD keeps him safe.

Key truth

The LORD hears His people and gives them gladness and peace in distress.

David brings a wounded reputation before the God of his righteousness. When people turn his glory into dishonour, he seeks mercy from the One who sets the godly apart for Himself. Then he tells his hearers to search their hearts on their beds and be still. He calls them to offer sacrifices of righteousness and put their trust in the LORD. Grain and new wine picture a harvest full of good things, yet God's gladness is greater. The light of God's face means His favourable care, the gift David wants more than plenty. Peace grows from the LORD's care rather than from the disappearance of every trouble.

How does Psalm 4 show us that the LORD hears His people and gives them gladness and peace in distress?

The LORD hears the person He sets apart for Himself.

David's confidence begins with what the LORD has done. God has set apart the godly for Himself, and David knows He hears his call. The mockers' words cannot overturn that belonging or stop that prayer.

God gives gladness greater than a rich harvest.

Many people ask where they can find good. David asks for God's face to shine on them, because His favour brings joy beyond full barns. God's gifts are good, and knowing the Giver is better still.

The LORD alone gives David peace for the night.

David's last words name the reason he can lie down. The LORD alone makes him live in safety. His rest is an expression of trust, and the prayer invites troubled people to seek God's care.

Memorise

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, Yahweh alone, make me live in safety.

Psalm 4:8

Looking to Jesus in my life

Ask yourself in your heart, what am I seeking for peace instead of Jesus?

David asks, “Yahweh, let the light of your face shine on us.” He needs mercy, relief and the gladness God gives. A rich harvest cannot do what the Lord's favour does for a troubled heart.

Sin makes us guilty before that holy God. Jesus accepted condemnation for His people at the cross, so that His righteousness would be theirs through faith. He was raised to life. The whole debt is paid, so those trusting Him have peace with God and need no further offering for sin.

Turn from your sin and put your trust in Jesus. Forgiveness belongs to everyone who rests in Him. You may bring Him a restless heart, a wounded name and an uncertain tomorrow. The peace He gives rests on His completed saving work, and trouble cannot undo it.

Parent's note

Tell your children that the LORD gives His people gladness and peace when they are distressed. Please do not tell them they are saved just because they grew up in a Christian home. Call each child to turn from sin and trust Jesus, and pray that God would give them a new heart.

Pray together

Now please close your time together in prayer. Thank God for the gladness and peace He gives His people. Bring the heart question to Him. Every child can pray, so let each one say a short prayer if they want to.

Therefore you now have sorrow, but I will see you again, and your heart will rejoice, and no one will take your joy away from you.

John 16:22

Father, thank You that Your favour is better than a rich harvest. Search our hearts and forgive our love of empty things. Please lead us to trust Jesus for peace with You. As we lie down this week, help us bring our troubles to You and rest in Your care. Amen.
