Psalms 41: The LORD sustains the afflicted
Begin in prayer
Before we hear about a sick man and a false friend, let us ask the Lord for hearts that consider the weak. Pray that He would bring us to Jesus for mercy and teach us faithful kindness.
Behold, at that time I will deal with all those who afflict you, and I will save those who are lame, and gather those who were driven away. I will give them praise and honor, whose shame has been in all the earth.
Zephaniah 3:19
Father in heaven, please open our eyes as we read Your Word, and help us to see Christ. Show us that the LORD sustains His people in weakness and teaches them thoughtful mercy toward others. Make us more like Jesus. And please bless our family as we worship You together. In Jesus' name, Amen.
See where we're going
David opens with blessing for the person who considers the poor, whom the LORD will preserve and sustain through illness. He then asks mercy and healing for himself, confessing that he has sinned against God. Enemies wish for his death and the loss of his name, while a false visitor gathers material to spread abroad. Even the trusted friend who ate his bread has turned against him. David asks God to raise him up so that he may repay them, and recognises God's delight because the enemy has not triumphed. God upholds his integrity and sets him in His presence forever, so he ends by blessing the everlasting God of Israel.
As you read Psalms 41, look for the answers:
- What does the LORD promise the person who considers the poor? (verses 1 to 3)
- Who has turned against David after sharing his bread? (verse 9)
Reflect together
Key truth
The LORD sustains the merciful in affliction and upholds His servant even through betrayal.
Considering the poor means giving thoughtful care to people in weakness, the opposite of the cruel judgment David meets on his sickbed. God's blessing promises preservation and sustaining care within trouble, including restoration from illness. David's own plea for healing includes confession, bringing his guilt before God while enemies speak as though his death were their hope. The false visitor misuses access to a sick man, collecting evil to spread instead of bringing comfort. Sharing bread made the familiar friend's betrayal especially bitter, because the injury comes from someone welcomed close. Jesus applies the bread and lifted heel to His betrayer in John 13 verse 18, while David's personal confession remains his own. David's request to repay his enemies belongs to his royal responsibility to deal with wrong, asking God first to restore him. God's upholding presence then gives the ground for praise, and the everlasting blessing closes the first part of the Psalter.
How does Psalm 41 show us that the LORD sustains the merciful in affliction and upholds His servant even through betrayal?
The LORD sustains those who consider the weak.
David calls the person who considers the poor blessed. Trouble and illness still come, and God promises care within them. This mercy stands against the enemies' desire for a sick man to die and be forgotten.
The LORD upholds His servant through betrayal.
David's trusted friend has turned against the man whose bread he shared. David asks mercy for his own sin and restoration to deal with wrong. His confidence rests in the Lord who upholds his integrity and sets him in His presence forever.
Memorise
Blessed is he who considers the poor. Yahweh will deliver him in the day of evil.
Psalm 41:1
Looking to Jesus in my life
Ask yourself in your heart, where have I used another person's weakness instead of showing the mercy of Jesus?
David speaks of the friend “who ate bread with me” and then turned against him. The betrayal wounds him in the place where trust should have been safe. Yet he still asks mercy from the Lord who sustains the afflicted.
We also have sinned against the God who has shown us kindness. Jesus was betrayed, and at the cross He bore His people's punishment and died in their place. The Father raised Him from the dead. Pardon and acceptance are fully secured for His people, resting on the work their faithful Saviour has completed.
Turn from sin and trust Jesus. He forgives all who seek mercy through Him. Bring Him the ways you have used another person's weakness, and ask Him to make you considerate toward the afflicted. His people may bring the pain of betrayal to the faithful Lord whose presence will never fail them.
Parent's note
Tell your children that the LORD sustains His people in weakness and teaches them thoughtful mercy toward others. Please do not tell them they are saved just because they grew up in a Christian home. Call each child to turn from sin and trust Jesus, and pray that God would give them a new heart.
Pray together
Now please close your time together in prayer. Thank God for sustaining the afflicted and keeping His people in His presence. Bring the heart question to Him. Every child can pray, so let each one say a short prayer if they want to.
From now on, I tell you before it happens, that when it happens, you may believe that I am he.
John 13:19
Faithful Lord, thank You for caring for Your people in weakness and betrayal. Please bring us to trust Jesus for mercy. Forgive our cruel words and the times we have used another person's weakness. Teach us thoughtful kindness toward the sick and poor, and sustain those who feel abandoned through this week. Amen.
