Psalms 49: God redeems beyond the grave
Begin in prayer
Before we consider the riches people boast about, let us remember the life no money can buy. Ask God to expose our trust in possessions and lead us to the ransom Jesus has paid.
But go you your way until the end; for you shall rest, and shall stand in your lot, at the end of the days.
Daniel 12:13
Father in heaven, please open our eyes as we read Your Word, and help us to see Christ. Show us that wealth cannot save us from death and that God alone can redeem and receive His people. Make us more like Jesus. And please bless our family as we worship You together. In Jesus' name, Amen.
See where we're going
The sons of Korah call people of every rank to hear wisdom about life, wealth and death. They ask why evil days should make them fear those who boast in riches. No person can ransom a brother or pay God enough to keep him alive forever. Wise and foolish alike die, leaving their wealth behind even while imagining their houses will endure. Death becomes the shepherd of those who trust this foolish way, yet the singer trusts God to redeem and receive his soul. He therefore warns against fearing a rich person's growing glory, because wealth and human praise cannot keep anyone from the darkness of death.
As you read Psalms 49, look for the answers:
- Can anyone pay God to keep a brother alive forever? (verses 7 to 9)
- Who will redeem and receive the singer? (verse 15)
Reflect together
Key truth
God alone can redeem His people from the power of the grave, where wealth cannot save them.
The riddle is for rich and poor together because death exposes the limits of every person's wealth. A ransom is the price that frees someone, and human possessions cannot pay God for a life that never ends. Naming lands after themselves expresses the wealthy person's hope of permanence while the grave waits for them too. The comparison with animals concerns their inability to keep earthly honour or escape death by riches. Death shepherding them pictures its power to gather those who trusted their wealth. The upright will have dominion in the morning, so the grave's present power cannot be the final victory. The singer's hope rests in God redeeming his soul from Sheol, the realm of the dead, and receiving him. First Peter 1 verses 18 and 19 identify Christ's precious blood as the ransom that silver and gold cannot provide. The final warning returns to the rich person who enjoys praise while living yet carries none of that glory into death.
How does Psalm 49 show us that God alone can redeem His people from the power of the grave, where wealth cannot save them?
Wealth cannot pay the ransom that saves a life.
Rich and poor must hear the same wisdom about death. No one can buy a brother's unending life from God. Wise people and fools leave their possessions behind when they die.
God can redeem His people from the grave's power.
Death shepherds those who trust their wealth, and their earthly beauty decays. The singer places his hope in God's power to redeem and receive him. That hope frees him from fear of another person's growing riches.
Memorise
But God will redeem my soul from the power of Sheol, for he will receive me.
Psalm 49:15
Looking to Jesus in my life
Ask yourself in your heart, what am I asking money to give me that only Jesus can provide?
The singer confesses, “God will redeem my soul from the power of Sheol.” He has seen that no person's riches can pay the ransom for life. His hope rests in the God who can receive him beyond the grave's power.
We need rescue from the judgment our sins deserve, and all our money leaves that debt unpaid. Jesus gave His own life in His people's place, bearing the punishment of their guilt at the cross. He rose from the dead. His finished ransom provides everything needed for their forgiveness and everlasting life.
Turn from sin and trust Jesus. Forgiveness is Christ's free gift to sinners who take refuge in Him. Bring Him the fear that makes you cling to possessions, and ask for wisdom to use what He gives. The risen Redeemer receives those who trust Him, bringing them through death into a welcome no money could buy or take away.
Parent's note
Tell your children that wealth cannot save us from death and that God alone can redeem and receive His people. Please do not tell them they are saved just because they grew up in a Christian home. Call each child to turn from sin and trust Jesus, and pray that God would give them a new heart.
Pray together
Now please close your time together in prayer. Thank God that He can redeem His people where human wealth cannot help. Bring the heart question to Him. Every child can pray, so let each one say a short prayer if they want to.
For as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, even so the Son also gives life to whom he desires.
John 5:21
God who alone redeems, You know how easily we fear losing money and admire those who have more. Please turn us from trusting riches and bring us to Jesus. Thank You for the ransom His finished work provides. Give us generous hearts and wisdom to live before You, remembering that You alone can receive us beyond death. Amen.
