Psalms 52: God outlasts the boastful deceiver

Begin in prayer

Before we hear the boast of a destructive man, let us remember the loving kindness that outlasts every boast. Ask God to expose our deceit and bring us to trust Jesus as our refuge.

“The bows of the mighty men are broken. Those who stumbled are armed with strength.

1 Samuel 2:4

Father in heaven, please open our eyes as we read Your Word, and help us to see Christ. Show us that God's loving kindness lasts forever and that wealth and deceit cannot protect anyone from His judgment. Make us more like Jesus. And please bless our family as we worship You together. In Jesus' name, Amen.

See where we're going

David writes after Doeg the Edomite tells Saul that he has seen David at Ahimelech's house. He confronts the powerful man's boast in evil by declaring that God's loving kindness endures. The man's deceitful tongue plots harm, loving falsehood and words that destroy. God will destroy him forever, removing him from his home and the land of the living. The righteous will see his fall with awe and recognise the folly of trusting riches and wickedness instead of God. David places his own trust in God's loving kindness, like a green olive tree in His house, and promises thanks among His people.

Key truth

God's loving kindness endures, while He destroys those who trust their wealth and destructive deceit.

Doeg's report led to Saul ordering the death of the priests at Nob, a command Doeg carried out when Saul's servants refused. David therefore answers real cruelty with the truth that God's loving kindness endures continually. The destructive tongue serves a heart that prefers evil to good and loves lying more than truth. The razor pictures the harm these calculated words can do, while wealth gives the speaker a false sense of strength. God's sentence uproots him from the land of the living and names his destruction as forever. The righteous fear God and laugh at the collapse of a boast that seemed so powerful. Their words explain his ruin as choosing riches and wickedness for refuge while refusing God as his strength. David's green olive tree pictures lasting life in God's presence, rooted in trust in His loving kindness. Among God's saints, he gives thanks and waits on the good name of the Lord.

How does Psalm 52 show us that God's loving kindness endures, while He destroys those who trust their wealth and destructive deceit?

God destroys the strength built on deceit and riches.

The powerful man loves lies and uses words to harm others. His riches seem to make that wickedness strong. God's lasting judgment exposes the ruin of refusing Him as refuge.

God's enduring loving kindness gives His people lasting hope.

David compares himself to a green olive tree in God's house. His hope grows from trust in the Lord's loving kindness forever. He gives thanks and waits on God's good name among His people.

Memorise

But as for me, I am like a green olive tree in God’s house. I trust in God’s loving kindness forever and ever.

Psalm 52:8

Looking to Jesus in my life

Ask yourself in your heart, what lie am I using for safety instead of coming honestly to Jesus?

David says, “I trust in God's loving kindness forever and ever.” The boastful deceiver will be uprooted, while David hopes like a green olive tree in God's house. Lasting refuge rests in the God whose loving kindness endures.

Our own deceit also deserves His judgment. Jesus took His people's punishment upon Himself and died for them at the cross, though no lie was found in Him. God raised Him from the dead. The righteous Lord has fully secured His people's pardon and their place in God's presence, a welcome no wealth could buy.

Turn from deceit and put your trust in Jesus. He forgives all who come to Him. Bring the lies by which you have tried to protect yourself, and ask for truthfulness rooted in His care. Those who belong to Him may wait among His people for the Lord whose loving kindness will outlast every boast.

Parent's note

Tell your children that God's loving kindness lasts forever and that wealth and deceit cannot protect anyone from His judgment. Please do not tell them they are saved just because they grew up in a Christian home. Call each child to turn from sin and trust Jesus, and pray that God would give them a new heart.

Pray together

Now please close your time together in prayer. Thank God that His loving kindness endures and that deceitful power will not escape His judgment. Bring the heart question to Him. Every child can pray, so let each one say a short prayer if they want to.

Even as the Father has loved me, I also have loved you. Remain in my love.

John 15:9

Lord, Your loving kindness endures while deceitful strength comes to ruin. Please expose the lies we love and bring us to Jesus for pardon. Give us truthful speech that protects the weak. Teach Your people to trust Your mercy, give You thanks and wait together on Your good name. Amen.
