Psalms 53: God sees sin and brings salvation
Begin in prayer
Before we hear what God sees in human hearts, let us ask Him to expose what we hide from ourselves. Pray that He would lead us to Jesus and the salvation that brings lasting joy.
For I have no pleasure in the death of him who dies,” says the Lord Yahweh. “Therefore turn yourselves, and live!
Ezekiel 18:32
Father in heaven, please open our eyes as we read Your Word, and help us to see Christ. Show us that God sees our sinful hearts and that only His salvation can bring us lasting joy. Make us more like Jesus. And please bless our family as we worship You together. In Jesus' name, Amen.
See where we're going
David describes the fool who denies God in his heart and lives in corrupt ways. God looks from heaven for anyone who understands and seeks Him, finding that all have turned away and none does good. Workers of evil devour His people while refusing to call on Him. Yet their confidence ended in fear, for God had defeated the attackers, and His people had shamed those He rejected. The song closes by longing for Israel's salvation from Zion. David looks for the gladness that will come when God brings His people back from captivity.
As you read Psalms 53, look for the answers:
- What does God find when He looks upon people? (verses 2 and 3)
- What joy does David long for at the end? (verse 6)
Reflect together
Key truth
God sees every sinful heart, judges His enemies and brings saving joy to His people.
The fool's denial is spoken in his heart and shows itself in conduct that refuses God's rule. God finds no one doing good, and Paul uses this to show all people are under sin (Romans 3 verses 10 to 12). The cruelty of consuming His people like bread shows how ordinary harming others has become to the workers of evil. They do not call on the God whose people they oppress, yet denying Him cannot prevent His judgment. Scattered bones picture the ruin of an attacking force that God has rejected and His people have put to shame. Their sudden terror exposes the failure of the strength on which they relied. Zion is the place of God's dwelling, so the closing plea seeks salvation from God Himself. The hope of return from captivity carries the song beyond corruption and fear toward the joy only His restoring power can give.
How does Psalm 53 show us that God sees every sinful heart, judges His enemies and brings saving joy to His people?
God sees that all people have turned away from Him.
The fool tries to live without God while God sees every heart from heaven. His search finds no one doing good. The evildoers' cruelty and refusal to pray show what that rebellion produces.
God judges attackers and brings His people saving joy.
Those who threatened His people meet fear and shame under God's judgment. Their strength cannot protect them from the God they refused. The final prayer seeks salvation and the gladness of His people's return.
Memorise
When God brings back his people from captivity, then Jacob shall rejoice, and Israel shall be glad.
Psalm 53:6
Looking to Jesus in my life
Ask yourself in your heart, what sin have I hidden while acting as though Jesus did not see?
David longs for “the salvation of Israel” to come from Zion. God has looked upon the human race and found none who does good. The people need the rescue that only the Lord can bring.
That verdict includes our own corrupt hearts and the sins we choose. At Calvary Jesus died in His people's place, bearing God's righteous anger against their rebellion. He was raised from the grave. Christ's atoning work is complete, providing everything needed for His people's forgiveness without a remaining guilt their goodness must settle.
Turn from sin and trust Jesus. Even a guilty fool finds forgiveness in Jesus when he turns from sin and trusts Him. Confess the ways you live as though God did not see, and ask Him to teach you to call on Him. Those who belong to Him may look to the saving Lord for the joy they cannot give themselves.
Parent's note
Tell your children that God sees our sinful hearts and that only His salvation can bring us lasting joy. Please do not tell them they are saved just because they grew up in a Christian home. Call each child to turn from sin and trust Jesus, and pray that God would give them a new heart.
Pray together
Now please close your time together in prayer. Thank God that His saving power gives hope to people who cannot claim goodness of their own. Bring the heart question to Him. Every child can pray, so let each one say a short prayer if they want to.
This is the judgment, that the light has come into the world, and men loved the darkness rather than the light; for their works were evil.
John 3:19
Holy God, You see the evil we try to hide and the good we fail to do. Please bring us to repent and trust Jesus, whose finished work gives pardon. Deliver Your people from those who harm them. Turn our hearts toward You in prayer, and give us joy in Your salvation. Amen.
