Psalms 54: God is the helper who sustains

Begin in prayer

Before we hear the prayer of a man whose hiding place has been betrayed, let us come to the God who sustains. Let us seek the saving Lord through Jesus and thank Him for the care that sustains His people.

You have also given me the shield of your salvation. Your gentleness has made me great.

2 Samuel 22:36

Father in heaven, please open our eyes as we read Your Word, and help us to see Christ. Show us that God is the helper of His people and His truth will bring a just answer to evil. Make us more like Jesus. And please bless our family as we worship You together. In Jesus' name, Amen.

See where we're going

David prays after the Ziphites tell Saul where he is hiding. He asks God to save him by His name and vindicate him by His might. Violent men seek his life without setting God before them, so he pleads for God to hear his words. His prayer turns into the confession that God is his helper and the Lord sustains his soul. He trusts God to repay his enemies' evil and asks Him to destroy them in His truth. Promising a free will offering and thanks to God's good name, David closes by confessing deliverance from trouble and triumph over his enemies.

As you read Psalms 54, look for the answers:

Reflect together

Key truth

God saves by His name, sustains His people and repays evil in His faithfulness.

The Ziphites were David's own countrymen, yet their report gave Saul help in pursuing his life. Calling such opponents strangers exposes how their actions estrange them from the God they should honour. David's appeal to God's name rests on the character and power the Lord has made known. Vindication asks the true Judge to defend his cause when enemies try to settle it by force. The confession that God is his helper answers the threat to his life with the Lord's sustaining care. His request for the enemies' destruction puts their evil before the God whose truth requires a just answer. A free will offering is given willingly, so the promised worship expresses gratitude for deliverance. The good name on which David called at the beginning becomes the name he will thank as he confesses God's rescue.

How does Psalm 54 show us that God saves by His name, sustains His people and repays evil in His faithfulness?

God's name and might give His people reason to pray.

David's hiding place has been reported to Saul, and violent men seek his life. He appeals to the character and power of God Himself. His plea asks the Lord to hear and defend him.

God sustains His servant and faithfully judges evil.

David calls God his helper and the One who sustains his soul. He trusts the Lord to repay the evil his enemies have done. That confidence turns his plea toward a willing offering and thanks for God's deliverance.

Memorise

Behold, God is my helper. The Lord is the one who sustains my soul.

Psalm 54:4

Looking to Jesus in my life

Ask yourself in your heart, what threat am I carrying without seeking help from the Lord Jesus?

David confesses, “God is my helper.” His hiding place has been exposed, and enemies who disregard God seek his life. The Lord's sustaining care gives him reason to pray, trust and give thanks.

Our greatest need of rescue comes from our guilt before God. Jesus bore His people's punishment in their place and gave His life to save them at the cross. He rose from death. His completed saving work is enough to secure their pardon, and their acceptance needs no further offering.

Turn from sin and put your trust in Jesus. He forgives everyone who comes to Him. Bring the threat you cannot master before the Lord and ask for His sustaining help. Those who belong to Him may give thanks to the faithful God whose name is good, even while they depend on His care.

Parent's note

Tell your children that God is the helper of His people and His truth will bring a just answer to evil. Please do not tell them they are saved just because they grew up in a Christian home. Call each child to turn from sin and trust Jesus, and pray that God would give them a new heart.

Pray together

Now please close your time together in prayer. Thank God for His sustaining help and His faithful judgment of evil. Bring the heart question to Him. Every child can pray, so let each one say a short prayer if they want to.

Yet a little while, and the world will see me no more; but you will see me. Because I live, you will live also.

John 14:19

God our helper, Your name is good and Your power can save. Please bring us to Jesus for forgiveness through His completed work. Sustain Your people whose lives are threatened, and judge the evil done against them. Teach us to call on You, trust Your faithfulness and give willing thanks for Your help. Amen.
