Psalms 55: The LORD sustains the burdened righteous

Begin in prayer

Before we hear David's wish to fly away, let us bring the burdens we cannot escape before God. Ask the Lord to hear our burdens through Christ and teach us to depend on His sustaining care.

I will strengthen them in Yahweh; and they will walk up and down in his name,” says Yahweh.

Zechariah 10:12

Father in heaven, please open our eyes as we read Your Word, and help us to see Christ. Show us that the LORD hears and sustains His people and that deceitful cruelty will meet His judgment. Make us more like Jesus. And please bless our family as we worship You together. In Jesus' name, Amen.

See where we're going

David pleads for God to hear him while enemy oppression fills his heart with fear. He longs for a dove's wings so he could fly to rest far from the storm. Violence and deceit fill the city, and the deepest wound comes from a familiar friend with whom he once worshipped. He asks God to confuse their plans and bring sudden judgment upon the wicked. Turning to prayer through evening, morning and noon, he confesses that God hears him and has redeemed his soul in peace. His friend's gentle words hide a broken covenant and a heart set on war. David entrusts the burdened righteous to the sustaining LORD and leaves deceitful cruelty to His judgment.

Reflect together

Key truth

The LORD hears and sustains His burdened people, while deceitful cruelty meets His judgment.

The wish for dove's wings gives words to David's longing for distance from danger and a heart overwhelmed by fear. The trouble reaches through the city's streets and walls, where violence, abuse and deceit have taken hold. A companion's betrayal hurts beyond an open enemy's insult because they shared counsel and worship in God's house. David asks God to confuse the evildoers' speech and bring sudden death upon them, placing the judgment before the Lord. His own answer to their hostility is repeated prayer, with evening, morning and noon gathering the whole day before God. The everlasting King hears, while the enemies' refusal to change is joined to their lack of fear before Him. Smooth words disguise the friend's attack and broken covenant, making deceit part of the violence itself. Casting the burden on the LORD means entrusting it to the One who promises to sustain the righteous. God will bring the cruel and deceitful down to destruction and cut their lives short, while David ends by entrusting himself to Him.

How does Psalm 55 show us that the LORD hears and sustains His burdened people, while deceitful cruelty meets His judgment?

God hears His people's cry through fear and betrayal.

David's fear makes him long for wings to carry him far away. The deepest grief comes from a friend who once worshipped beside him. He brings that wound to God in repeated prayer throughout the day.

The LORD sustains the righteous and judges deceitful cruelty.

Gentle words cannot hide the betrayal from the God enthroned forever. David calls the burdened to entrust their load to the LORD who sustains them. The final warning leaves the cruel under God's judgment, and David leaves himself in God's care.

Memorise

Cast your burden on Yahweh, and he will sustain you. He will never allow the righteous to be moved.

Psalm 55:22

Looking to Jesus in my life

Ask yourself in your heart, what burden or betrayal am I trying to carry without coming to Jesus?

David says, “Cast your burden on Yahweh, and he will sustain you.” Fear and betrayal have made him long to escape, yet he turns to the Lord in prayer. His hope rests in the God who hears and upholds the righteous.

We also need mercy for our own deceit and broken faithfulness. Jesus died for His people, bearing the punishment their sins deserved while He Himself remained faithful. He rose from the dead. His saving work is finished once for all, and His burdened people are forgiven and sustained by the Lord who hears them.

Turn from sin and trust Jesus. Jesus welcomes guilty people who seek Him in faith, granting pardon beyond the betrayal and trouble they bring. Bring Him the burden you have tried to hide and the wound of another person's betrayal. Jesus sustains His people while they ask Him for strength to speak truth and remain faithful through betrayal.

Parent's note

Tell your children that the LORD hears and sustains His people and that deceitful cruelty will meet His judgment. Please do not tell them they are saved just because they grew up in a Christian home. Call each child to turn from sin and trust Jesus, and pray that God would give them a new heart.

Pray together

Now please close your time together in prayer. Thank God that He hears His people and sustains them through the burdens they bring to Him. Bring the heart question to Him. Every child can pray, so let each one say a short prayer if they want to.

for the Father himself loves you, because you have loved me, and have believed that I came from God.

John 16:27

Faithful Lord, You know the burdens and betrayals that trouble our hearts. Please forgive our deceit and lead us to trust Jesus through His finished saving work. Hear Your people who feel overwhelmed. Sustain them, judge cruelty and teach us truthful faithfulness as we entrust the burdens of this week to Your care. Amen.
