Psalms 56: God remembers tears and gives life
Begin in prayer
Before we hear David confess his fear, let us bring our own fears before the Lord. Pray for faith in Jesus and trust in the God who remembers every tear of His people.
There is no one as holy as Yahweh, For there is no one besides you, nor is there any rock like our God.
1 Samuel 2:2
Father in heaven, please open our eyes as we read Your Word, and help us to see Christ. Show us that God remembers His people's sorrows and His Word gives them reason to trust Him when afraid. Make us more like Jesus. And please bless our family as we worship You together. In Jesus' name, Amen.
See where we're going
David pleads for mercy when the Philistines seize him in Gath, where enemies attack him throughout the day. He admits his fear and chooses to trust the God whose word he praises. His enemies twist his words, watch his steps and plot against his life, so he asks God to cast them down. He trusts God to count his wanderings and keep his tears, knowing that God is for him when he calls. Returning to praise for God's word, David refuses to let human threats have the final word. He promises thank offerings because God has delivered him from death and kept his feet. He can therefore walk before Him in the light of the living.
As you read Psalms 56, look for the answers:
- When does David say he will trust God? (verse 3)
- What does God keep account of? (verse 8)
Reflect together
Key truth
God remembers His people's tears and delivers them, giving His word as the ground of trust.
Gath was a Philistine city, where David sought escape from Saul and found himself recognised and afraid. His cry for mercy names relentless pressure, with enemies turning words and movements into opportunities for harm. Trust begins in the fear he admits, resting on the God whose word he praises. The question about what flesh can do puts human attackers beneath the greater power of the Lord. David asks that their wickedness meet judgment, refusing to treat their plots as something God will overlook. The bottle and book picture God's careful remembrance of every wandering and tear, beyond the hostile watching of his enemies. Knowing that God is for him gives David reason to return to praise and trust. His promised thank offerings fulfil vows made to God and give public thanks for rescue. Deliverance has a purpose beyond escape, enabling him to walk before God in the light of the living.
How does Psalm 56 show us that God remembers His people's tears and delivers them, giving His word as the ground of trust?
God's word gives His frightened people reason to trust.
David admits that he is afraid among enemies who seek his life. He brings that fear to the God whose word he praises. Human threats cannot overrule the Lord on whom his confidence rests.
God remembers His people's tears and delivers them to walk before Him.
The bottle and book picture the care with which God remembers David's sorrows. David trusts the Lord to hear his call and turn back his enemies. His thanksgiving answers deliverance that lets him walk before God in the light of the living.
Memorise
When I am afraid, I will put my trust in you.
Psalm 56:3
Looking to Jesus in my life
Ask yourself in your heart, what fear do I need to bring to Jesus while trusting His word?
David says, “When I am afraid, I will put my trust in you.” He has enemies who twist his words and watch his steps. Yet God remembers his tears and gives him reason to praise His word.
Our hearts also need mercy for refusing God's word and choosing our own way. Jesus bore His people's sin and died in their place, receiving the judgment their rebellion deserved. He rose from the dead. His completed saving work leaves nothing more to pay, and the God who remembers their tears holds His people as His own.
Turn from your sin and entrust yourself to Jesus. With Jesus there is forgiveness for every sinner who trusts Him, because His atoning work is complete. Tell Him the fear you struggle to name, and ask Him to teach you confidence in His Word. The Lord remembers His trusting people's tears, giving them reason to bring each sorrow before Him and live with thankful hearts.
Parent's note
Tell your children that God remembers His people's sorrows and His Word gives them reason to trust Him when afraid. Please do not tell them they are saved just because they grew up in a Christian home. Call each child to turn from sin and trust Jesus, and pray that God would give them a new heart.
Pray together
Now please close your time together in prayer. Thank God that He remembers His people's tears and gives them life to walk before Him. Bring the heart question to Him. Every child can pray, so let each one say a short prayer if they want to.
Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom would we go? You have the words of eternal life.
John 6:68
Merciful God, You know every wandering and tear of Your people. Please turn us from resisting Your Word and bring us to trust Jesus for pardon. Teach us to bring our fear to You. Give thankful hearts to those You sustain, and help us walk before You in the life You give. Amen.
