Psalms 76: God judges to save the afflicted
Begin in prayer
Before we hear how God broke the power of an army, let us consider the strength we fear and the strength we trust. Pray for reverence before God and faith in Jesus, whose saving strength is greater than the powers we fear.
Who can stand before his indignation? Who can endure the fierceness of his anger? His wrath is poured out like fire, and the rocks are broken apart by him.
Nahum 1:6
Father in heaven, please open our eyes as we read Your Word, and help us to see Christ. Show us that God defeats proud power and judges to save the afflicted, calling us to fear Him. Make us more like Jesus. And please bless our family as we worship You together. In Jesus' name, Amen.
See where we're going
Asaph's victory song celebrates the God known in Judah, whose dwelling is in Salem and Zion. There He broke the weapons of war, leaving mighty warriors unable to lift their hands. Chariots and horses were stilled at the rebuke of the God of Jacob. His anger leaves no one able to stand, and His heavenly judgment silences the earth as He rises to save the afflicted. Even human wrath serves His praise, and the survivors of His wrath remain restrained. The song calls for vows to be fulfilled and gifts brought to the God whom even the earth's kings must fear.
As you read Psalms 76, look for the answers:
- What happens to the mighty warriors at God's rebuke? (verses 5 and 6)
- Why does God rise to judgment? (verse 9)
Reflect together
Key truth
God defeats proud power and judges to save the afflicted, calling the whole earth to fear and honour Him.
God's greatness is known through His deeds in Judah, where His dwelling in Salem, the old name for Jerusalem, gives the song its centre. The broken weapons show that the city's deliverance depended on His power, beyond the force its attackers could command. The warriors' last sleep means death, making the helpless hands of the mighty evidence of the Lord's decisive rebuke. His glory exceeds the mountains of prey, the picture of hostile power enriched by its conquests. The question about standing before His anger teaches reverent fear of the God whose verdict no creature can overturn. His judgment from heaven stills the earth and rescues the afflicted, so justice against oppression becomes salvation for those beneath it. Human anger cannot defeat His purpose, and even its outbreak will serve the praise of the God who restrains the survivors of His wrath. Those who have made vows must fulfil them, while the surrounding peoples owe gifts to the One whose greatness they have seen. Cutting off the spirit of princes includes their life and power under His judgment, making the mightiest rulers subjects who must fear Him.
How does Psalm 76 show us that God defeats proud power and judges to save the afflicted, calling the whole earth to fear and honour Him?
God's rebuke defeats the power of proud enemies.
The invaders' weapons are broken and their mighty warriors lie helpless in death. Their strength cannot answer the God who speaks against them. His glory gives His people reason to honour Him above the powers that threaten them.
God's judgment brings rescue to the afflicted.
The earth falls silent when the Lord pronounces judgment from heaven. He rises to save the lowly who have suffered under proud power. His anger shows why even kings must fear Him and why His people should keep their vows.
Memorise
You, even you, are to be feared. Who can stand in your sight when you are angry?
Psalm 76:7
Looking to Jesus in my life
Ask yourself in your heart, whose power am I fearing more than the Lord Jesus?
Asaph asks, “Who can stand in your sight when you are angry?” The weapons and strong hands of a mighty army could not answer God's rebuke. His judgment rescued the afflicted and called the earth to fear Him.
Our own proud sins also deserve the holy God's anger. Jesus bore the punishment owed by His people and gave His life to deliver them from condemnation. He was raised from death. Every charge against His people is answered, and their forgiveness and acceptance rest on the saving work He completed once for all.
Turn from your proud self trust and seek mercy through Jesus. He forgives everyone who comes to Him. Bring Him the fears you have about powerful people, asking for a heart that honours God's greater authority. His saving greatness gives everyone trusting Christ reason for worship while they depend on His righteous care.
Parent's note
Tell your children that God defeats proud power and judges to save the afflicted, calling us to fear Him. Please do not tell them they are saved just because they grew up in a Christian home. Call each child to turn from sin and trust Jesus, and pray that God would give them a new heart.
Pray together
Now please close your time together in prayer. Thank God for His power to judge oppression and rescue His afflicted people. Bring the heart question to Him. Every child can pray, so let each one say a short prayer if they want to.
Jesus therefore answered them, “Most certainly, I tell you, the Son can do nothing of himself, but what he sees the Father doing. For whatever things he does, these the Son also does likewise.
John 5:19
Holy and mighty God, please bring us to Jesus for the mercy His finished work provides. Thank You for Your power to overthrow oppression and rescue the afflicted. Teach us to fear You above the people who threaten us. Help Your people keep the promises they make and honour You with grateful worship. Amen.
