Psalms 93: The mighty LORD reigns forever
Begin in prayer
Before the song lifts the sound of roaring waters, let us remember the King who is mightier than their noise. Ask the everlasting King for faith in Christ and confidence in His firm Word when threatening voices grow loud.
Now I, Nebuchadnezzar, praise and extol and honor the King of heaven; for all his works are truth, and his ways justice; and those who walk in pride he is able to abase.
Daniel 4:37
Father in heaven, please open our eyes as we read Your Word, and help us to see Christ. Show us that the Lord reigns above every threatening power with firm words and lasting holiness. Make us more like Jesus. And please bless our family as we worship You together. In Jesus' name, Amen.
See where we're going
The song announces the Lord's reign with majesty and strength as His royal clothing. The world's established order rests beneath the throne He has held from long ago. He Himself is from everlasting, before any flood could lift its voice. The waters rise with repeated noise and mighty breakers, yet the Lord on high is mightier than all of them. His statutes stand firm, and holiness adorns His house forever.
As you read Psalms 93, look for the answers:
- Who is mightier than the sea? (verse 4)
- What stands firm before the holy Lord? (verse 5)
Reflect together
Key truth
The LORD reigns from everlasting, stronger than the roaring waters, with firm statutes and lasting holiness.
The King's clothing pictures majesty and strength belonging to the Lord whose rule establishes the world. He is eternal, so His throne owes nothing to the history of the creation He governs. The floods' repeated rising gives the threatening waters a loud voice, letting us feel the force beneath the confession of His greater might. Their breakers remain below the Lord on high, whose power puts every surge beneath His rule. His firm statutes join that power to trustworthy words, giving His worshippers instruction that no threatening voice can overturn. Holiness belongs in His house forever, because the reigning God draws His people to a worship and life fitting His presence.
How does Psalm 93 show us that the LORD reigns from everlasting, stronger than the roaring waters, with firm statutes and lasting holiness?
God's eternal throne stands above every threatening power.
The Lord wears majesty and strength as a king wears his royal clothing. The roaring waters rise beneath the One whose throne is from everlasting. Their force must be measured against the greater might of the King on high.
God's firm words and holiness belong to His lasting reign.
The song ends with statutes that stand firm and a house adorned by holiness. God's power gives His people a dependable word to hear. Those who draw near are called to honour the character of the King whose house they enter.
Memorise
Above the voices of many waters, the mighty breakers of the sea, Yahweh on high is mighty.
Psalm 93:4
Looking to Jesus in my life
Ask yourself in your heart, what loud fear am I placing above the rule of the Lord Jesus?
The psalm confesses, “Yahweh on high is mighty.” Roaring waters rise beneath His eternal throne, and holiness adorns His house. We need more than power over outward dangers to enter the presence of this holy King.
Our sins deserve His righteous anger. Jesus died for His people and bore the punishment their rebellion required. He was raised to life. The righteousness His people need is supplied through His perfect obedience, and His once for all offering has fully secured their forgiveness.
Turn from your sinful resistance and trust Jesus the King. Everyone who comes to Him receives pardon. Bring Him the fears that have sounded louder than His Word. The King whose throne cannot be shaken gives His people firm instruction, calling believers to seek holiness beneath His rule.
Parent's note
Tell your children that the Lord reigns above every threatening power with firm words and lasting holiness. Please do not tell them they are saved just because they grew up in a Christian home. Call each child to turn from sin and trust Jesus, and pray that God would give them a new heart.
Pray together
Now please close your time together in prayer. Thank God for His eternal reign and ask for hearts that trust His Word and honour His holiness. Bring the heart question to Him. Every child can pray, so let each one say a short prayer if they want to.
Jesus answered, “You would have no power at all against me, unless it were given to you from above. Therefore he who delivered me to you has greater sin.”
John 19:11
Eternal King, please forgive the fears and desires we have placed above Your rule. Bring us to Jesus for the pardon His completed sacrifice provides. Thank You that no threatening power can overthrow Your throne. Give Your people confidence in Your firm Word and a growing love of holiness as we worship and live before You. Amen.
