Psalms 96: Declare the King among the nations
Begin in prayer
Before we hear the call to declare God's glory among the nations, let us remember the Creator who deserves every people's worship. Pray for joy in Christ and willing voices that declare the salvation of our righteous King among the nations.
For from the rising of the sun even to the going down of the same, my name is great among the nations, and in every place incense will be offered to my name, and a pure offering: for my name is great among the nations,” says Yahweh of Armies.
Malachi 1:11
Father in heaven, please open our eyes as we read Your Word, and help us to see Christ. Show us that our Creator reigns over every nation and will judge with righteousness and truth. Make us more like Jesus. And please bless our family as we worship You together. In Jesus' name, Amen.
See where we're going
A new song calls the whole earth to bless the Lord and tell of His salvation day after day. His glory belongs among all peoples, because the nations' idols cannot compare with the Maker of the heavens. Honour, majesty, strength and beauty fill the presence into which the families of nations are summoned. They must bring an offering, worship in holy array and tremble before the reigning Lord. The announcement of His fair judgment then gathers heavens, earth, sea, fields and trees into rejoicing. He is coming to judge the world with righteousness and the peoples with His truth.
As you read Psalms 96, look for the answers:
- What should be declared among the nations? (verse 3)
- How will the Lord judge the world? (verse 13)
Reflect together
Key truth
God the Creator reigns over all nations and comes to judge with righteousness and truth.
The repeated call to sing carries the Lord's salvation beyond one congregation, giving His people news to proclaim among all nations. Day after day makes that telling a settled pattern of worship, rooted in the marvellous works that reveal His glory. Idols cannot create, while the Lord's making of the heavens gives His claim a foundation beyond every nation's customs. Glory and strength already belong to Him, so ascribing them acknowledges what is His due. Bringing an offering into His courts expresses that allegiance, while holy array and trembling teach reverence before the King. His reign establishes the world, and His equity means that no people will receive a crooked verdict. The sea's roar, the field's exulting and the trees' song picture creation welcoming its righteous Judge. His coming judgment makes truth final, giving the whole song its reason for confident and joyful proclamation.
How does Psalm 96 show us that God the Creator reigns over all nations and comes to judge with righteousness and truth?
God's saving glory must be declared among every people.
The Lord gives His worshippers a song that travels among the nations. His marvellous works supply its news, while His creation exposes their idols' emptiness. Telling His salvation day after day acknowledges the glory that belongs to Him.
God receives holy worship and comes to judge with truth.
The nations bring an offering and tremble before their rightful King. The world's stability rests beneath His reign, and His judgments are fair. Creation's pictured rejoicing welcomes the Judge whose righteousness and truth will govern every verdict.
Memorise
Say among the nations, “Yahweh reigns.” The world is also established. It can’t be moved. He will judge the peoples with equity.
Psalm 96:10
Looking to Jesus in my life
Ask yourself in your heart, whose praise am I seeking while I keep silent about the Lord Jesus?
The song announces that the Lord “comes to judge the earth.” Sea, fields and trees join the pictured joy before His righteous coming. The Maker whose glory belongs among the nations will judge every people according to truth.
That truth exposes our sins and the judgment we deserve. Jesus bore God's anger against His people and died to obtain their forgiveness. God raised Him from the dead. His obedience and sacrifice have settled their whole debt, securing acceptance before the Judge they could never satisfy themselves.
Repent of your sin and put your confidence in Jesus. All who come to Him are forgiven. Ask Him to give you reverence in worship and courage to speak of His salvation. The risen Saviour deserves the praise of every nation, so His people can tell their neighbours and await His openly revealed righteous reign.
Parent's note
Tell your children that our Creator reigns over every nation and will judge with righteousness and truth. Please do not tell them they are saved just because they grew up in a Christian home. Call each child to turn from sin and trust Jesus, and pray that God would give them a new heart.
Pray together
Now please close your time together in prayer. Thank God for His saving glory and ask for reverence and courage before the coming Judge. Bring the heart question to Him. Every child can pray, so let each one say a short prayer if they want to.
Jesus therefore said to them again, “Peace be to you. As the Father has sent me, even so I send you.”
John 20:21
Creator and King, please forgive our silence about Your glory and our careless worship. Bring us to Jesus, whose finished work has answered His people's guilt. Help our family speak of His salvation day after day. Send faithful witnesses among every people, and prepare us to welcome the righteous judgment by which Your truth will stand. Amen.
