Revelation 19: Hallelujah to the God who reigns

Begin in prayer

Before we read the Hallelujah of heaven and the rider named Faithful and True, please stop and pray. Ask the Lord to fill your hearts with praise, and to show you the King of kings.

He is your praise, and he is your God, who has done for you these great and awesome things, which your eyes have seen.

Deuteronomy 10:21

Father in heaven, please open our eyes as we read Your Word. Show us that You reign, and that Jesus is the King of kings and Lord of lords. Help us to turn from our sin and worship Him. Make us more like Jesus. And please bless our family as we worship You together. In Jesus' name, Amen.

See where we're going

Heaven answers Babylon's fall with praise because God has judged her corruption and avenged His servants' blood. The multitude rejoices that the Lamb's marriage has come, and His bride receives bright linen for the feast. When John bows to the angel, the messenger directs him to worship God. Heaven then opens upon a white horse whose rider is Faithful and True, the Word of God and King of kings. His heavenly armies follow as the beast and earth's rulers gather against Him. The beast and false prophet are thrown alive into the lake of fire, and the rider's sword kills the rest.

As you read Revelation 19, look for the answers:

Reflect together

Key truth

God reigns through Jesus, the faithful King who gathers His bride and judges every enemy in righteousness.

The song of heaven answers the mourning on earth, because the end of Babylon's violence displays God's righteous rule. Hallelujah calls them to praise the Lord, whose justice answers His servants' earlier prayer (Revelation 6 verse 10). The scene moves from the unfaithful city's ruin to the faithful bride's wedding. Her linen represents the saints' righteous acts, yet even this clothing is given, showing that grace makes her ready. Weddings gathered a community for celebration, and the Lamb's supper pictures His people's joyful belonging to Him. The rider who follows bears the Lamb's own royal title, identifying the victorious King as the Savior who was slain. His sword comes from His mouth, showing that His word accomplishes judgment without help from His armies. The wedding supper and the birds' terrible supper set belonging to Christ beside the ruin of opposing Him. Every enemy's power ends before the King who judges in righteousness.

How does Revelation 19 show God's reign through the King who gathers His bride and judges His enemies?

Heaven praises God for judging evil and avenging His servants.

The multitude praises God for judging the prostitute's corruption and avenging His servants' blood (verses 1 and 2). Her smoke rises forever, while elders and living creatures bow before God's throne (verses 3 and 4). The summons to praise includes every servant who fears Him, small and great (verse 5). When John bows to the angel, the messenger refuses worship and tells him to worship God (verse 10). The testimony of Jesus gives prophecy its purpose, directing attention beyond the servant to his Lord.

The Lamb gives His bride readiness for the wedding.

The multitude celebrates the Lamb's marriage, and His wife makes herself ready (verse 7). Her bright linen is given, and John identifies it as the righteous acts of the saints (verse 8). Their obedience is real, and the clothing's gift shows that readiness depends on God's grace. The angel calls those invited to the Lamb's marriage supper blessed and affirms God's words as true (verse 9).

Jesus is the faithful King who judges in righteousness.

The rider is Faithful and True, with fiery eyes, many crowns and a name known only to Himself (verses 11 and 12). His robe is sprinkled with blood, and His revealed name is the Word of God (verse 13). The mouth's sword, iron rod and wine press show His word executing God's fierce wrath against the nations (verse 15). The iron rod recalls the promised Son's authority over the nations (Psalm 2 verses 7 to 9). Heaven's armies follow the King of kings in pure linen, sharing a victory He accomplishes (verses 14 and 16).

The powers opposing Jesus fall before His word.

Birds are summoned to eat kings, commanders, mighty men, horses and riders, free and slave, small and great (verses 17 and 18). The beast, earth's kings and their armies gather against Christ and His army (verse 19). The beast and false prophet are seized and thrown alive into the lake of fire burning with sulfur (verse 20). The rider's mouth sword kills the rest, and the birds are filled with their flesh (verse 21).

Memorise

I saw the heaven opened, and behold, a white horse, and he who sat on it is called Faithful and True. In righteousness he judges and makes war.

Revelation 19:11

Looking to Jesus in my life

Ask yourself in your heart, to whom do I give praise, and how can I come to the Lamb?

John heard a great multitude cry, “Hallelujah! For the Lord our God, the Almighty, reigns!” Then he saw heaven opened and a rider on a white horse, who “is called Faithful and True”. His name is the “Word of God”, and on His garment is written “KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS”.

This rider is Jesus Christ, the Lamb who was killed, whom the angel has already called King of kings. He laid down His life for His people and bore their sin on the cross. That payment is enough. He rose, and He lives, and He reigns.

So bow before the King of kings. Turn from your sin and put your trust in Jesus. Jesus will forgive the sin of each one who comes, and that one will be blessed at the marriage supper of the Lamb. Hallelujah, the Lord God reigns.

Parent's note

Tell your children that Jesus is the faithful King who receives His people and judges evil. Explain the sexual sin, burning, lake of fire and birds' supper in age-appropriate words, preserving the seriousness of judgment. A Christian home cannot make anyone part of Christ's bride. Call each child to repent and trust Him, and pray for God to give them a new heart.

Pray together

Now please close your time together in prayer. Give God the praise that belongs to Him, and bring the heart question to Him. Every child can pray, so let each one say a short prayer if they want to.

I heard something like the voice of a great multitude, and like the voice of many waters, and like the voice of mighty thunders, saying, “Hallelujah! For the Lord our God, the Almighty, reigns!

Revelation 19:6

Father, hallelujah, for You reign. Thank You for Jesus, the King of kings and Lord of lords. Please bring each of us to bow before Him and trust Him, and fill our hearts with praise this week. Amen.
