Revelation

Revelation 2: Jesus knows His churches

Begin in prayer

Before we hear what Jesus says to His assemblies, and how He calls them to repent and to be faithful, let us bow before Him. Ask the Lord to settle our thoughts, to speak to our family through His Word, and to let us see Him walking among His assemblies.

You shall fear Yahweh your God; you shall serve him; and you shall cling to him, and you shall swear by his name.

Deuteronomy 10:20

Father in heaven, please open our eyes as we read Your Word. Show us Jesus, who knows all that His people do and calls them to repent. Make us more like Jesus. And please bless our family as we worship You together. In Jesus' name, Amen.

See where we're going

Jesus addresses Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamum and Thyatira as the Lord who knows their works and searches their hearts. Ephesus must return to its first love or lose its lamp stand, while suffering Smyrna must remain faithful even to death. Pergamum holds Christ's name despite Antipas's death, yet tolerates teaching that draws people into idol worship and sexual immorality. Thyatira's love and service are growing, yet it permits Jezebel to teach the same sins. Christ has given her time to repent, and He announces judgment on her and her followers. He tells the faithful to hold firmly until He comes, promising life and a share in His rule to those who overcome.

Key truth

Jesus walks among His churches, knows their works, and calls them to repent and to be faithful.

The titles from John's vision now become Christ's searching words to named churches. Ephesus stood in a city known for Artemis's temple, and its church guarded the truth while letting its first love go. Smyrna's poverty sits within a wealthy city devoted to Rome, making Christ's verdict of spiritual riches precious. Its promised crown is the victor's wreath of life, even when faithfulness costs earthly life. Pergamum resisted the pressure that killed Antipas, yet gave room to the kind of temptation Balaam put before Israel. Thyatira's trade guilds held meals honoring their gods, making Jezebel's permission to join idolatry an attractive path to keeping work. Christ searches beneath those excuses, and His judgment repays each person's deeds. Her refusal answers Christ's patience with rebellion, bringing the punishment He announces. Those who reject the teaching must hold firmly, and Christ promises the overcomer His own rule and the morning star.

How does Revelation 2 show us that Jesus walks among His churches, knows their works, and calls them to repent and to be faithful?

Jesus calls loveless Ephesus to repent or lose its lamp stand.

Ephesus tests false apostles and endures for Christ's name, yet has left its first love (verses 2 to 4). Christ commands it to remember, repent and do its first works (verse 5). Unless it repents, He will move its lamp stand from its place. He commends its hatred of the Nicolaitans' works, and promises the overcomer the tree of life (verses 6 and 7).

The risen Jesus gives life to those faithful through suffering and death.

Christ knows Smyrna's oppression and poverty, yet calls it rich (verse 9). The hostile people claiming to be Jews serve Satan, a judgment on these opponents rather than every Jewish person. The devil will imprison some to test them, and their oppression will last ten days (verse 10). Jesus commands faithfulness to death and promises the crown of life. The overcomer will escape harm from the second death, the final judgment (verse 11).

Jesus commands Pergamum to repent of teaching that leads into sin.

Pergamum holds Christ's name even where Antipas was killed and Satan's throne stands (verse 13). Yet some follow Balaam's teaching, which led Israel into idol food and sexual immorality (verse 14). Others follow the Nicolaitans' teaching (verse 15). Christ commands repentance, or He will make war against them with His mouth's sword (verse 16). He promises the overcomer hidden manna and a white stone bearing a new name known to its receiver (verse 17).

The Son of God judges Thyatira's sin and rewards those who hold firmly.

Thyatira's growing love and service do not excuse tolerating Jezebel's teaching of sexual immorality and idol food (verses 19 and 20). Christ will throw her into a bed, and her adulterous partners into great oppression unless they repent (verses 21 and 22). He will kill her children with Death, searching minds and hearts and repaying each one's deeds (verse 23). Others must hold firmly until He comes, overcoming and keeping His works to the end (verses 24 to 26). He promises authority over the nations with an iron rod and the morning star (verses 26 to 28).

Memorise

I am he who searches the minds and hearts. I will give to each one of you according to your deeds.

Revelation 2:23

Looking to Jesus in my life

Ask yourself in your heart, what must I repent of, and will I ask Jesus to forgive me?

Jesus told Smyrna that He is “The first and the last, who was dead, and has come to life.” The Lord who walks among His assemblies and knows every work is the One who died and lives again. To Ephesus He said, “Remember therefore from where you have fallen, and repent.”

We have all left the love we owe to God, and our own works cannot mend it. That is why Jesus died on the cross for His people, as the payment for their sin. The price is paid in full, and nothing is left to add. Then He rose to life, and He will bring His own people through to the end.

So hear what the Spirit says. Turn from your sin and put your trust in Jesus. He promises the tree of life, in the Paradise of God, to the one who overcomes, and that one belongs to Him. Come to Him now, and He will never turn you away.

Parent's note

Tell your children that Jesus knows His churches and commands repentance, with life promised to those who overcome. Please do not tell them they are saved just because they grew up in a Christian home. Call each child to turn from sin and trust Jesus, and pray that God would give them a new heart. Explain the sexual sins and judgments in your own words, keeping Christ's warning about Jezebel's children at its full weight.

Pray together

Now please close your time together in prayer. Thank God that Jesus knows His own and calls sinners to repent, and bring the heart question to Him. Every child can pray, so let each one say a short prayer if they want to.

He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the assemblies. He who overcomes won’t be harmed by the second death.

Revelation 2:11

Lord Jesus, thank You that You were dead and have come to life. Thank You that You know all our works and still call us to repent. Please turn our hearts to You, and help us to trust You. Make us faithful to You this week. Amen.
